basically there is a dell machine in the office, that we have to keep on to avoid the problem. basically when it turns on, when you go to log into that computer (type in the password) about once every 3 or 4 startups the keyboard will work and you are able to type in the password. every other time i have to use the mouse to restart the machine until the keyboard finally works. any ideas? flaky keyboard?

model and service tag of unit, BIOS version, and is the keyboard the one that came with the unit or not? how clean is the keyboard? and spills on the keyboard?

A work machine?

I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft. pole!

If you do any TSing or repair, every problem from that point on, will be your fault because you tried to fix it!

Good Luck!

Why not just swap your keyboard and see it it makes a diff? If so - have it replaced - keyboards are too cheap to waste time with.

Yeah. Borrow somebody else's keyboard and see if that works. Also, try a different USB port on your PC. Keep a spare keyboard around the office, since this kind of stuff can be a costly time waster.
