what differentiates between the "i" connotation and the "iS" connotation?

ex. 318i vs. 318iS
i = 4-door. is = 2 door

oooh.. i see. any idea what the S stands for? or is it a random letter?

which costs more? the i's or the iS's?

I believe the S stands for 'sport.' There is also and ic = 2-door convertible. Usually the i and is models usually really close in price. The iS may be a little more desireable because it's more of a sporty 2-door than the boring 4-door (i). The biggest differientiator in price will be whether it's an automatic or manual. What years are you looking at? There are some great deals out there for mid 90s 318 with decent miles. Awesome cars.

Xi's are fairly new though, aren't they? i thought they just started having awd coupes/sedans 2-3 years ago...

Good call! I forgot about that one. Those are pretty rare. They've had the iX option for a good 10 years or so, maybe more??
