on old comps...what did it mean to "park the head" (HDs that is)?

Older HDs had a "landing zone" where the drive heads would rest against the platter when the drive was turned off. Moving the heads to this zone is also known as "parking" the heads...

The heads would move to the edge of the platter or just off of it. This would keep the heads from hitting the disk if the heads bounced during movement of the computer.

C:>park Or something like that I can't remember any old DOS comands. I was reformating a HD and it took a wile to remember how to exit.
