on my way to work today, while watching some woman

Yesterday I was in city traffic and saw a car in front of me (and in the lane next to me) come inches from rear-ending another car. I thought "That idiot" before I even saw who was driving. When traffic was moving again I passed that car, and the woman driving was READING. It looked like the box to a toy or something, but there were no kids in the car. She just had it propped on the steering wheel, reading. I wanted to scream at her. But I was in a hurry so I didn't 🙂

IMO everyone should start out on a clean slate w/ a clean record and pay the same basic amount. The rate just based on the coverage they need. Shouldn't matter what car you drive, how old you are, etc, in the beginning. After that, you fark up, you pay. Yes there are a few more variables than that, which can be worked out based on what kind of coverage you want and need... but it shouldn't matter if you are man/woman/young/old imo. Well, I'm free to start up an insurance company that does just that, aren't I, and I haven't so I guess I can't complain. 😛 Oh well.

Agreed. It probably can't work completely like that (see reasons stated above), but I think there could be some kind of comprimise. Something like the credit rating model, where you get a score based upon your history and your behavior... and that is what your rate is calculated from.

In theory thats the way that it works - in the same way that you have to build up credit, with motor insurance you have to build up proof that you are a safe driver.

The problem is that you start off classed as high risk until you prove otherwise, through not having accidents / thefts / installing an immobiliser, taking defensive driving lessons etc.

I wondered why insurance is higher for men

ok, just an FYI.... insurance co's CANNOT discriminate because of sex.
age, yes. sex no.

a x year old male pays MORE than a x year old female until you are over 25

no tickets, no accidents, same car.

Case in point:
rebecca: 18 years old, drives a 2000 honda cr-v.
adam: 18 years old, drives a 2000 honda cr-v.
same options, neither have ANY tickets.

Adam pays some $700 more annually than rebecca. Both have state farm.

My rates (17 year old male, 1986 GMC full sized van valued at a whopping $1300) are the same as this 16 year old chick in my english class with her brand new, fully loaded S2000.

You should've at least honked, then stared at her 😉

yeah, males should really not be allowed to drive until they're 30. and then only on private property.

considering a womans job is in the kitchen; how is that supposed to work?

This is going to get ugly. 😀

Nice job helping that guy out, though. Most people would have just kept on driving and let that guy be screwed.

It's not really descrimination. I'm sure there is a lot to backup why they charge males more than females. Probably has to do with the actual damage to a vehicle. Where more women are probably involved in fender benders when more men are probably involved in a high speed collision which would cause more damage.

So if they have data to back up that certain minorities cause more accidents, do you think they would be able to charge them more? Hell no, they wouldn't be. What they need to do is balance everyones rate and have a set basic rate and then based person to person depending on claims and tickets, charge them accordingly.

Who do you see driving really nice fast cars or flashy cars with really nice sound systems? Mostly men... And thieves just love to steal those and the stuff in them...

actually around here it's mostly girls. I live in atlanta, and probably 60% of the lowered blue civics, or huge lifted trucks are driven by girls with rich daddies. most males drive older civics, older pickups, and so forth.
