1. tour the forbidden city
2. check out ming tombs
3. hike parts of the great wall
4. visit summer palace and/or temple of heaven
5. bargain at the pearl market
6. try out peking duck
7. watch a chinese opera

Definitely go to Xi'an. One of the best cities i visited in China. They have awesome food in the Muslim quarters be sure to check that out. Just watch out for Taxi drivers trying to rip you off but other than that, enjoy.

Wash your hands thoroughly before every meal. It ain't the USA when it comes to sanitation over there. Personal experience tells me you should also watch out for the homeless and avoid arguing with the locals....

forgot to mention . . . only drink SEALED bottled water. . . some shady vendors take used water bottles and fill it with tap, then chill it and sell it to unsuspecting tourists.

for the great wall, go to the Simatai section, which hasnt been reconstructed like the other popular ones. a lot fewer tour buses go there too.

go to a chinese acrobatics show. they are pretty amazing.

if you go to xi'an, see if you can make a stop at Datong to see the Yungang Caves and Hanging Monastery
