On map search engines, why isn't there an option to not use highways in your map anymore?

i remember using mapquest about a year ago, there was an option to make the map not have highways/expressways included on how to get to a destination. What happened to that option? i guess they don't appreciate people that are new drivers or scared to go on the highway for the time being.

I wondered the same thing.

I hate that they changed that. Sometimes the highway route takes longer beacuse you have to exit and use feeder roads, etc. And then sometimes it takes you through all kinds of freaking twists and turns because it thinks it will save you 5 seconds.

GRRR... I was looking for that a few months ago, too, and it made me very angry that I couldn't find it.

Why would they remove a feature like that?! It was invaluble to bicyclists and other alternative transportation riders!

That negates the whole point of mapquest..

You may as well just clear the desk and get out the paper map and ruler.

That also assumes that you actually know where you're going.

Not completely... it's a lot better to find the shortest route, etc. I guess we have to use Streets and Maps...

although I wondered about that too.

Maybe cause hardly anyone used it. I saw it there often, but never once used it. Why would I go out of my way to find a slower route? What would be a cool feature is an "avoid tolls" option.

And the number of drivers that are scared to go on the highway is what? 0.5% of drivers? And if they're going to cater to stupid irrational fears, maybe they should have an "avoid bridges" option, and "avoid roads with steep hills next to them" option, and an "avoid roads with narrow shoulders" option, etc.

LOL! :D

I always thought the point was for bicyclists that, obviously, can not go on the highway. Heh.

I swear there used to be an "avoid tolls" option, too..

Even though we don't really have toll roads around here.

Using both paper maps and online maps such as mapquest in combination gives much better results than an online mapping software can ever give.

As mentioend in this post, he wants to not use the shortest route as described by the mapping software.

I use mapquest and a few paper maps every single day of my life for work. My map books are my bible. It's fairly clear when you look at a map, which will be the best route to take to avoid the highways. Its not like there are magical roads that go away from your destination that will bring you there in a quicker amount of time.

Well, I know in Chicago, traffic is a problem. That's one reason I'd like to avoid the highways sometimes.
