On-Line Gaming much like living in the Ghetto

I am a big on-line gamer. I have been playing on-line games for 3 years now. Mostly "Rainbow Six", "Quake" and "UT." I spent 2 years as the Head Admin for the Clanladder.com and asa a sysop for the "MSN Gaming Zone." During this time I made a lot of freinds, played some GREAT matches and worked hard to make it to #1 numerous times on the clanladder. However, a few months ago, I quit doing it completely due to the STRESS level that I was experiencing.

Stress? You say? YES!! Stress from the following:

1. People that get a kick out of "cussing out" people just for the fun of it.
2. People who threaten to HACK you just because they are bored.
3. Kids who act like complete morons because they know there are no consequences for their actions.
4. People who cheat their butts off just to look good.
5. People who LIE their butts off about who and what they are.

I could go on and on but I think you get the idea. It is a VERY DARK environment and being part of it comes with a lot of negativity. I got sick of the Negativity and the total lack of respect for human goodness.

This is why I sya that on-line gaming is like living in the ghetto where one can't go without being threatened, cussed at, or cheated.

I'll just stick to the single player games where I know I'm not being cheated and I don't have to read the F word every 10 seconds.

Spend about 15 minutes in the hallway of just about any high school during class change.

You'll see the same thing.

I just kick their butts in the game then they can't say anything. :)

Plus, all I need to say is "but so does your mom". That really gets kids going.

I used to play on battle.net a lot playing diablo and diabloII. Pk's (player killers) runed the experience. There have been arguments that such assassins have made the game more exciting. They must not have been pk'd. It stinks, especially when they grab all the gold you drop when you die.

MrJ,

Interesting post. The games you listed tend to attract more dregs than some others but all online games have that problem. I've played 2 subscription online games in my time. They started out with a very decent community but as they became successful and more popular the number of twits increased proportionately and that killed much of the enjoyment.

So one tip is to hop onto new online games quickly, enjoy them while the community spirit is there, then move on when the scum show up. Heck this is true for a lot of things in life. :)

azraele,

I guess you were lower level, or else gold wouldn't be important.. pk's do add a dimension to the game. I have pk'd, and i have played in groups to safeguard against pkers.

Mr. J: You mentioned Quake, would that be Quake1 (the best one ever???) or Quake2 or 3?

I was an avid player of Quake1 CTF and I still play once in awhile. What was your name on there, if you were always at the top of the skill leve I think I should know who you are, just checking.

I totally agree about the Annoying Little Bastards (i used to be one of them lol)

lord of the flies was good :)
but i agree about the ghetto thing
Everytime i play diablo 2, i always get some level 70+ person declaring hostility on me even after I tell them i don't wish to fight.
btw my character is only lvl 35 and i would easily get killed.
I come on to enjoy myself but people like that ruin the experience.

Passat, I never played Quake1 , only Quake 2 and 3. Most of my time was spent in Rainbow Six though and playing on the MSN gaming zone. I guess you could say I was the most well known player in that community. My handle was SF_Magnum, CL_Magnum, and just Magnum. I had everything from people wanting to buy me computers to wanting to rape my daughter and threatened to do so. I had to get out.

Jelly Baby, thx for the tip, I think that is wise. Most games do start out fairly civil then turn bad when people start getting good.

ArkAoss, thanks for the suggestions, I will go look for those books today.

This is worse than LotF. There is an authority figure (MrJ) to correct the wrong, and yet the wrong still festers and grows (pansies cheaters and schmuck jerks).

MAdthumbs, that is the biggest crock of BS and its people like you that contribute to it. Maybe it is "Just a game" and "Internet" but it is Real Life because it reflects the state of our society. If people can't be civil and respectful on the internet, then most likely they are the same way in their real lives. I doubt you would even know what I mean by "Stress." The stress is real and it is because I really care about these people or I wouldnt have been there to HELP them for 2 years. I wouldn't have put up with it for 2 years. My physical condition is fine, no vitamin deficiencies. Just a genuine concern for the youth of America and a total amazement at how bad our society is getting.

MrJ,

On the other hand, if all the dinks are isolated in front of daddy's PC playing diablo 24/7 they can't be out in society doing us real harm. ;)

I've noticed that a lot of the more common games, especially the FPS games. i.e. Quake/HL/UT/etc. draw a rather unintelligent bunch from time to time and I agree that they are very very annoying. It gets very aggrivating when you see people being that lame. Of all the online games I've played, I've found MUDs to be the absolute cleanest. Perhaps just because they are quite a bit more difficult to join than a CS server.
