On hot days...do you leave the window open or closed?

I would imagine leaving it open and providing as much air flow as possible into your room/house would be the best way to do it.

My parents argue that since it's warmer outside than inside you should close the window, but I believe closing the window does not impenetrate the heat from outside from transferring in, and would just cause the room to be stuffier.

So, which is it? Assuming the house does not have A/C.

Leave it closed, you're letting warm air flow through the house. Heat should rise to the attic anyways.

Depends. Do you have Central Air AC or a Swamp cooler, or nothing?

Central Air- leave closed
Swamp cooler- open slightly
No AC- open wide w/ fan.

That's usually detrimental for me, since the sun would be shining directly on me in that case..

if you don't have AC open it wide up and hopefully get a breeze going through there. otherwise it gets stuffy

My 1st floor with the tiles almost all about act like a giant heatsink (so I've been told). It's considerably cooler in here than outside. I love it. I keep the windows shut.

If any of you say anything about that DAMN I'M FREEZING thread I posted in the winter-time, I'm gonna kill ya. ;)

I have seen both. Your house will eventually warm up. As the sun beating down on the house.
However opening the windows for a breeze, is going to make the house warmer if its warmer outside
than inside. But I find it a rare occasion when without AC a house is that much different than outside,
Atleast where I live. Usually the house will be a few degrees cooler until its starts to cool off outside,
then the house will be warmer.

Openning a window for a breeze will just circulate the air making it feel cooler, sort of like a fan.
Fans blowing air don't cool a room, they just make it seem cooler. But thats all that matters right.

Also depends on what floor you are on. If you are below ground in a finished basement say,
keep them closed. The ground will keep you cooler.

With my computer running I have to open the windows. It's been consistantly hotter in my room than outside.

open especially if you have a lot of windows ie greenhouse effect to a much smaller extent

also keep it open if you have a lot of TV's CRT monitors / refridgerators and cooking will heat it up dramatically

keeping the windows open will at least give you a breeze

I *used* to leave them open on my car, but then it was always like "oh noes! noon thunderstorm! rain!" and running down three flights of stairs and jogging across the lot to close the windows. This has happened often over the past 3 months, so now I just deal with the lethal sweltering heat when I get in my car.

If it cooler inside the house, leave everythign closed. Such as after you turn off the air conditioning or something...

If its hotter inside, natrually open up all the windows to get the airflow.

i live in AZ, so i know heat. if you had no A/C or evaporative cooling, i would leave the window closed. a decent house/condo probably has enough insulation to keep it cooler inside than out. but you would be pretty screwed if we had a hot year, like 115-120, either way you are screwed.
