Let's say the auction went fine... Winning bidder paid and the seller sent the item. Who is supposed to leave the positive feedback first?

The seller should leave feedback as soon as he receives payment.

Of course, a lot of sellers are pricks and wait until the buyer has left them feedback so they can decide how praiseful to be.

As a seller, I don't leave feedback until the buyer receives and confirms receipt of the item. It cuts down on hassles, because if for some reason there's a problem after they get the item I'm not stuck having praised them if they pull some stupid crap.

yeah i hate that. I mean, in most cases, if the seller gets the money, then the buyer has done his part 100%, so why shouldn't the seller leave FB first?

I usually wait (as a seller) until the buyer has received the item and is happy with everything, then I give them the feedback they deserve. I mostly do this because when I leave feedback as soon as I receive payment, they usually receive the item and forget to give me feedback. Giving them feedback after the transaction is completed generally reminds them to give me some too :)

The buyer, in all cases. You have to make sure they received it and are happy. I've left feedback for someone as a seller only to have the buyer neg me because their dvd was sent media mail- even though it was clearly indicated as such in the auction!

As a seller I will NEVER leave feedback until I receive it!

The seller should leave the feedback first because that way it allows the buyer to leave honest feedback. The feedback system is there mainly for the buyers so it is more important for the buyer to be honest then a seller.

Once the deal is finalized the seller should leave feedback first (if he got paid first)....however I don't automatically leave feedback on payment because alot of buyers try to renegotiate after the deal.

Things like 'give 10% back or I will HAVE to leave neg.'....I can go on and on.

Now I wait until i get the email saying everything is good, then I leave feedback. I still sometimes get screwed with the most common thing never getting my feedback.

In most cases (especially with Half.com sales),
I leave feedback first.

Only half the time do buyers ever bother to leave feedback for me.

If I am seller, I wait until the buyer has recieved the item, and has either said he is happy with it, or a few days has passed giving him opportunity to dispute something. If I am buyer, I leave it after I am happy with the item.

I don't care if the other person leaves me feedback, I'm not trying to win a prize with a high number...

It's really not a prize in so much that it helps with sales if that is your business or hobby.

Our business account had an unbalanced number of auctions closed to feedbacks left....most people assumed missing feedbacks were negatives the buyer/sellers were afraid to leave.

We now actively request feedback and if needed offer incentive.

On ebay your feedback is just like the flashy sign that gets a store noticed. WalMart and Sears for instance could just put a poster board up marked with a sharpie....the mom and pop shop needs to get that attention.

Why??? The buyer is taking the bigger risk sending the money first. Most sellers couldn't give 2 sh!ts what a buyer's feedback is like so long as they pay first. But for buyers, it's a different story.

I wait until the buyer has received the item. Usually, my shipping is so fast that they are overjoyed and are compelled to leave feedback first.

The buyer. If the seller leaves FB first and the package has to be returned or money has to refunded, there might be a problem if FB has already been left.

I don't sell much on eBay but my brother has sold a fair amount of music gear after upgrades and has several horror stories of buyers claiming items were defective because they refused to RTFM.

Many eBay buyers are stupid (just look at the prices they pay) and can't be trusted to leave accurate feedback. Others are whiny brats who will leave negatives for things out of the seller's control, like the shipping company losing or damaging a package.

Waiting to leave feedback is one way to make buyers try communication to resolve any dispute instead of just posting a negative.

The seller should leave feedback as soon as he receives payment.
This only works if the buyer is honest, reasonably bright, reads and understands the auction listing correctly, and realizes the seller can't control whether or not UPS workers play football with a package.
