? on dvd burning

I have an AIW 9800 Pro. I have it hooked up through s-video to my sat reveiver. Last night, I recorded a movie and now want to burn it to a dvd. I attempted it once but the disc will not play in any of my home dvd players. I'm guessing that it wasn't in the right format. What do I use to convert the format to one that I can burn to produce a dvd that will play in my dvd players? Thanks for any help here.

You're going to have to supply more information. What program did you use to burn the DVD? What menu options did you use in that software?
What type of disc did you burn it on (DVD + or - RW?, DVD + or - R?).
My best guess without any of this information is that you burned a DVD + or - RW disc, which works in the fewest number of players. DVD-R is best, with DVD+R close behind.

Okay, I used Sony DVD-R, Roxio EX cd/dvd creator. I believe the file that was burned was in .mpg format. Not sure on this one. I'm thinking that the format is wrong. There was a way to convert it to .avi. Should I do this? I'm just trying to get all this info so I don't waste any more discs. As you know, these things aren't cheap. Thanks guys.

While DVD format is mpeg (Actually, MPEG2 - 720 x 480 at 29.970 frames per second NTSC) in format, it's not a .mpg file. There is a structure for creating a DVD that must be followed to play correctly. I know that NERO will lay it out for you, but I'm not sure of Roxio Software.

There are many "How to Guides" at DVDRHELP. You might want to jump over there and check a few out. You'll need DVD Authoring (via Roxio or whatever) to acomplish what you want (mpeg to DVD).

DVDRHELP Authoring guides.

I looked for a guide on Roxio Easy CD - DVD creator and only found a VCD guide...no DVD guides there. You may also want to check out the DVDRHELP forums.

Good Luck! 🙂

hmm... all i know is that in order for a movie to play in the dvd player you need it in a mpeg format...

so maybe hit up www.doom9.org ?

there might be some guides on how to make it into an svcd..?

I can't get any dvd authoring software to work on my computer. I've tried TMPGenc and one other that I can't think of right now. Every time I try them, they hang and then I have trouble getting them to shut down. I've even shut down a lot of programs that were running in the background but to no avail. Anyone got any suggestions on getting these programs to run? Thanks a million.

Okay guys. I think I may have it figured out. But, I do have another question about the audio. What audio format should I transcode? pcm? mpeg layer II? or dolby? Thanks again guys.

I'm relatively new to this, but everything I have read has suggested PCM only. Never looked in to doing Dolby...

well, I did it in dolby and after about 3 hours of waiting, it finally transcoded. Now, I have no idea what to do next. I haven't noticed any video_ts or audio_ts folders anywhere so now what? What about the menus and timelines? Anybody want to try and explain these to me? Man, this stuff is confusing.

It wouldn't be difficult at all if you had the right software.
You described your software as "Roxio EX". Is that a typo? Do you actually have "Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator" (version 6?) If so, you would be better off trying to learn how to use this software than using a hodgepodge of free programs. It seems quite capable, based on the descriptions on the web.
I have both Pinnacle Studio 8, and Sonic MyDVD, and either of these makes creating a DVD with menus and transitions childs play.
I remember looking at the DVD authoring guides on DVDRHelp and Doom9 and they make it sound very complicated to do, using the free or shareware stuff (I never actually tried with those).
I mainly use Pinnacle Studio 8 for building the DVD, and I am quite pleased with it.

yes, my bad. Should've been roxio ez cd/dvd. I have pinnacle studio, the one that came with my vid card...ati version. I didn't know roxio authored dvd's. I recorded a movie off of my sattelite receiver and according to adobe encore dvd, when I try to transcode it, it says that it's already in legal dvd format. I think I'm just missing a step somewhere. As far as building menus and timelines...I am so lost on that. The main problem I'm having is that the software I'm using...ie. tmpgenc, adobe encore, etc., all stop responding very early in the process, like when I try and add the files so I can't even get started because of this. I've tried them on all my machines with the same response....not responding!!! I'm sure if I could get the damn programs to run, I could figure it out. I just can't seem to figure out why they are hanging. I've stopped programs from running, deleted programs that I don't use much off the machine, but to no avail. When using adobe encore dvd, I can take my file and transcode it into ntsc and pcm/mpeg layerII, dolby, but not sure what to do after that. Oh, I forgot. My pinnacle studio program won't work now. Not sure why. That was one of the programs that I deleted then when I tried to put it back on last night, it tells me that the license won't load or something like that and to reinstall. Well, I did that 3 times, each with the same message each time. One of these days........

even roxio ex cd/dvd creator hangs when I try and add the video file. WTH is going on? Why do all these programs stop responding when I try and use them? This even happens on a fresh boot of the system. I've got 512mb of corsair xms pc3200llpt ram. Is this enough? Could this be causing the problem....not enough ram?

Your RAM should not be a problem, unless you are running out of disk space also (for the Windows virtual memory file). Are the video files you are trying to include larger than your primary drives free space? I have 512meg memory also, and have no problems.
If I were you I would try to clear up your Pinnacle licensing problem. That should make it easy for you if you get it working. Here is a Thread from their forums about this type of problem: http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/

well, i just reformatted my system and put pinnacle back on and it works like a charm. TMPGenc still hangs for some reason though. About pinnacle, i can't find a way to build a dvd from a file that I already have on my computer. I only see a way to capture video from a source, not a file I already have. Oh well. I'm gonna play around with pinnacle. Thanks for all your help guys.

If you're using verison 8 of Pinnacle Studio, in the upper left corner of the screen is a tool bar with three items, 1 Capture/2 Edit/3 Make Movie. Select Edit and you'll see a window with a drop-down box (that probably says Video 1). Next to it is a Folder Icon you can use to select the clips you already have. After you select a clip, drag the little screen shot of it down to the editing area to add it to your project.
