On-board video to PCI (not pci-e) video card problems

Hello all,

My friend has onboard video. Recently he purchased the Nvidia 5700 PCI...the best card he could get. he does not have an agp port. When he installs the pci card there is no video signal but the system passes post fine.

He has disabled the onboard video in XP.

When he removes the video card from the pci slot the system does boot into Xp successfully.

He is also receiving a message, when he removes the pci card and boots into XP, that the system improperly was shut down, blah blah.

He has a microAtx mobo w/ a 2.4 P4B. I am unsure about the name brand. I believe it is an asus. I will try to get any more information from him.

He does not notice a power connector for the card, nor anything in the bios. He has also cleared his bios.

When I get off work we are putting it in my pc but I was wondering if there were any other options outside of putting it in mine and seeing if its a dud...

Thanks!

Did he disable onboard in BIOS; he may have to choose first boot device as well(PCI or onboard). Sometimes these options are buried deep within BIOS menus.

VGA Bios: is set to PCI card instead of Motherboard.

He says he cannot find anything else. There has to be an issue with the onboard not being truly disabled on the basic (bios) level..

Have you looked for an on-board video JUMPER on the motherboard & disbled it ??

You should find instructions for doing this in your motherboard manual.

Good luck.

I had a Compaq with an intel 810e board with onboard vid and only pci slots, and a nvidia 5200 card flat out wouldnt work with it with on board set either way. An ATI 7200 did work both ways (dual monitor set up).

that may not be of much use but i figured Id let you know.
