On-Board sound and process issues

Hey all,

me again with what will hopefully be my last "beg for help" post in a while.

System specs:
AMD64 3200 winchester
1GB OCZ PC3500 EB ram
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
6800GT
Windows XP

I'm currently experienceing two seperate issues taht are really bugging me. The first is that I can't seem to get my sound to work. I tried downloading the latest nforce3 drivers from the nvidia website - nada. dxdiag won't even see a sound card when I use those. Tried using the realtech driver from the MSI website, nothign going. dxdiag recognizes a soudn card with these drivers however I don't hear any sounds. Perhaps this would be better posted on the MSI site?

My second problem is the REALLy annoying one. I bring my brand new PC to my familys' house in perfect working order (24K 3dmark01, etc). In less than two days its messed up. I open counterstrike source or WOW and i get stutters, my fps drops down to like 0 then steps up back to 160 after a couple of seconds. Very irritating when it was running completley smoothly before. I look at my processes in the task manager and notice some program called "mainap" that is using 70-99% of my CPU constantly.I end the process only to have it restart again a split second later. It must be some kind of virus but both norton and PCcillin don't see it.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix either of these two problems, I'd really appreciate any help. I don't mind formatting my computer, but I'm not going to do that untill I figure out whats wrong with my sound. Like I said, any help is appreciated, thanks.

Do you have anti virus software installed and updated? What about windows updates? Contact MSI on the sound probably.

yes I have tried Norton and PC cillin for anti-virus, and I've disabled windows update, as it really annoys me. I have checked for security updates, and have downloaded the critical ones. I can't think of anything else besides a format to fix the mainap.exe. Does anyone have any ideas on the sound issue.

thanks.

1. Formatting is not the answer. You will never be able to figure out what your problem(s) is/are and how to avoid them if you format.
2. If you disable automatic updates, you better be diligent about visiting Windows Update weekly.
3. You aren't running NAV and PCillin simultaneously, are you? Make sure you're only running one anti-virus program at a time.
4. Double-check your speaker connection. If your sound card is recognized by dxdiag, make sure that your speakers (or headphones) are connected to the proper jack on your sound card.
5. Download Process Explorer to determine where your mainap.exe process is stored.
6. Post your HijackThis log so that we can determine if you have any spyware on your system.

Thanks for the reply

1: True, which is why I'm asking. However, I'm pretty much stumped so if I can't find out what I need to know, I'll just format.

2: I am, I just hate seeing it running in the bottom right constantly

3: No, I installed norton, uninstalled because it wasn't mine and then installed PC cillin, I've also tried an online anti-virus, panda or something like tha.
4: Checked. Multiple times, also hooked up the speakers to another system and they worked fine. Man I wish that was the problem

5: Will do.

6: Is hijack this part of process explorer or is it prat of adaware or spybot search an destroy?

What a great program, thanks for the link. I suspended mainap.exe's operation, now once I figure out how to get it off the application list, I should be able to delete it. Its in the Windows folder by the way.

Hey Goatie,
I think that your board uses Realtek audio and not Nvidia. Check and make sure, but my Neo 1 board uses realtek audio and you should use the Realtek Audio driver thats on MSI's site.
