On-board IDE vs PCI IDE performnace

To avoid contention on the same IDE channel, I connect 2 HD (both UDMA-5) to the on-board IDE channels and 2 optical drives (both UDMA-2) on the PCI IDE controller card (Promise Ultra 100 TX2). I have noticed that it takes longer for the Promise card to detect the optical drives than the hard drives duing boot.

Is there a performance penality if I swap the connection, i.e. HDs on the IDE card and optical drives on the on-borad IDE?

Thanks!

No shouldn't be a noticeable difference. There also isn't much difference if you had one hd and one cd drive on the same channel nowadays.

No there isn't a performance penalty if you swap the drives around however you'll probably still notice a small delay whether it's the Opticals or HDs on the PCI controller.
