Varies widely. I have a 14 year old 386 compaq system with a 300meg ESDI hard drive and it is still running great. On the other hand, I had numerous maxtors and quantums crap out after a year or so.

On average, how long do people live? there is "life expectancy" and there is average years a person lives..

Some die after birth, some live 100 years...

Getting the picture? ;)

<<so reliability on maxtor is not so good? >>

They are good. Out of 200 we've installed here at work, zero casualties.

Murphy say that it will work right up to where it can precipitate the worst possible catastrophe.

For a new hard drive, maybe an average of 3 years with a standard of deviation of 1 year?

All I can say is that every Western Digital I have bought (starting in '94 w/ a 540MB) has lasted to the present day. So out of 15 or so Western Digitals, all are still working great... Too bad I can't say that about the the IBM drives I have bought.

Edit: Accually started in '92 w/ a 420MB Western Digital I bought with a Gateway 486DX2-66

I've never had a problem with my Maxtors... had them for about five years. We have Maxtors at work and there haven't been problems with them, either.

I'd call Maxtor and see if you can't get a new drive. I think their warranties last for four or five years, but I might be wrong.

I always ran out of space and had to upgrade to a larger drive long before any failures occurred.
