This is the worst economy in the last 80 years and has been for quite sometime. Yes, some are doing better than others. But when I go to WalMart or Dollar General and I see the plight of the massive numbers of unemployed people, I have to wonder just how bad things are for everyone.

I notice more beggars and even a higher incidence of theft by people just trying to make ends meet. But not everyone shows it. Lots of people are good at putting on a brave face in light of the obstacles they face.

How bad do things seem around you?

I haven't noticed anything different. Lot of new faces on the commute in.

The only people I hear bitching about the economy are the stay at home moms who drive to the store in the Mercedes SUV their husbands have leased for them.

Depends. We have a high concentration of govt jobs, but it's hard to qualify that as work taking the whole economy into account. A govt job is like using one credit card to pay off another, and keeping one step ahead of the bill collectors. Regular jobs are in health care, and bullshit sales stuff.

So, taking just the job situation into account, without the philosophical baggage, we're doing better than average.

I hear ya. My brother just spent $6,000 on a transmission, $2,500 on a supercharger rebuild kit and $130 on an oil change for his Mercedes AMG.

He has to drive it a few more miles because of the bad economy. :(

you know how I know you're trolling?

the demographics at these establishments have not changed, one bit, from the times when the economy was "better."

Hey, perhaps your nephew should apply for a job at Wally-World? no Union or blaming Obamacare to get in his way, right?

Doing great. Federal defense jobs keeps the city and area thriving.

If the government got out of the defense business, we're screwed.

I wish I were trolling, but things are stinkin' in Anytown, USA. The other day I saw people asking others for change to make up the difference at the register, one car that could not start in the same parking lot and people with sad, dreary faces. :(

Do the words "sequestration" and "fiscal cliff" mean anything to the defense business? Im afraid the pain is headed for all areas that use government funds.

Its bad, and slightly getting worse. The job market isn't very good, and the housing market is very bad. A few of my neighbor's have tried to move, and dropped their houses up to $70,000 below their value and they don't sale after 2+ years.

Perhaps you need to move. Or shop somewhere else.

If all they are doing is trying to recover equity, maybe they should consider an auction. If they are upside down on their mortgage that might be difficult however. There might also be a short sale option.

Unemployment rate is high where I live... I would say maybe 3, although some would consider it a 4.
