Exactly. Most applications that truly require security (banks, CCs, etc) will have encryption at one of the higher layers anyways. If you check sensitive emails it's not a good idea to do it through an unencrypted wireless protection since I don't think that POP, IMAP, and SMTP use any form of encryption. The only thing you really don't want to do is look at email and such in an insecure manner. If you use webmail, make sure you go to the encrypted version of the site.
