I received a check for an item I sold in FS/T and it was written out to CASH. What does that mean?

Unless you're writing a check drawn from your own checking account to yourself it should never say CASH.

Since this check is coming from someone else it should be made payable to YOUR NAME not CASH.

You might be able to cash it but I wouldn't if I were the teller.

They did not know your name :( poor financial practice, so put it into the bank ASAP. Anyone could use it. :(

Well they obviously knew my name as it was sent in an envelope addressed to me. Why would you do that?

Just think of it as "cash". You can go to a bank and deposit it or cash it for real tangible bills. Like cash though anyone can deposit it now.

Defeats the purpose of writing a check, but sometimes its easier to deal with.

As far as why the person chose "cash", I have no idea. Must've been extremely lazy to write down your name again or something.

I would cash it at a bank or store where you don't normally go, and don't deposit it into any accounts you have, because if it bounces (and it's not sounding very good at this point) then they will suck it back out of your account. If it's made to cash, they would have to contact the financial institution it was drawn against, and since it doesn't have your name on it it will be harder for them to come after you to get it. Not trying to rip off the bank here, just protect you.
