I wish they would kill this turkey.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Senate Democrats and a handful of Republicans blocked a giant spending bill Tuesday, but Senate leaders from both parties said they expect the legislation to pass by week's end.

Democrats are angry over provisions related to food labeling, overtime pay, media ownership rules and other issues, and some fiscal conservatives are upset with the bill's cost.

Some senators, including Republicans, don't like the thousands of home-state earmarks in the bill. Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona called the bill a "disgrace" and an "outrage to the American people."

Republican Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the bill must be dispensed with quickly so lawmakers can start writing spending bills for next year.
I see nothing wrong with funding at last year's levels . . . especially considering even last year's level was unsustainable . . . and new pork would be blocked.

It's kind of weak argument for Bush to sign these spending bills and then claim he didn't approve of the spending. If he doesn't disapprove of it enough to veto pork then apparently he's the wrong man for the job. Granted, I'm not entirely sure many if any of the Democrats would do better but at least they would fight over it instead of the House rubber stamping Bush budget proposals.

the country would be better off if all pols would find a backbone to live within their means.

Most pols get kicked out for doing a bad job, not for NOT bringing home the bacon.

The bacon is not requested by the voters, just the special interest groups who make $$ from the skim.

Well actually the voters do like the bacon, they just hate the bill. In states like WV or farm-states in the Midwest where far more federal dollars flow in than out . . . they love the pork. Bush mentioned spending "hundred million for these sad folks" and "hundred million for these sad folks" but you know what kind of details he left out . . . billions going to contractors where the money will flow a little to the "people" and a lot to shareholders et al. He didn't put a price on the tax cuts, a price on going to Mars, or a price on his Empire Light because 1) he cannot add and 2) the three or four fiscal conservatives in the US Congress might actually raise a stink . . . and I mean a real stink.

Voters appreciate the bacon, but many do not request it. Like you say, they themselves realize there is a price to pay.
There is a difference between needed projects, make work projects and wasteful projects.

Voters do not have the ability to control the selection until after the fact. :)
Then finger pointing exists wihtin the beltway over who did what.

Pork is good if it is a useful project(refurbishing libraries, updating utilities), but when it is doing things like putting a rainforest in Illinois or unclogging a pool, it is just pissing it a way.
