OMGZ HELP! 4TH GEAR GONE WILD!

I have a 2006 mustang and all gears except 4th have a smooth almost electrical humm to them.

4th however sounds much more rugged and manly and i dunno what to describe it as.

Every gear except 4 sounds like say a honda civic, but 4 sounds like a harley motorcycle.

it's a 4.0l v6 with a five speed manual

What is the fix for something like this? What's even the cause?

Determine in what RPM range it happens in fourth gear.

Then drive at that RPM in other gears. I wouldn't bother with 1st. You're trying to determine if it's RPM related or road speed related or both. Somethings making the exhaust system resonate is what it sounds like. It could be a combination of RPM and roadspeed. Could be something loose. These problems can be hard to diagnose.

Regardless, it should still be under warranty and it may very well be a known problem. I would let the dealer handle it.

The RPMs has no effect on it.

3000 rpms in 1st 2nd 3rd 5th all sounds fine
3000 rpms in 4th sounds like a diesel truck or something

empty car full car slow fast doesnt matter

🙁

dealership says since theres no negative effects i should just shut up, basically

they'll keep saying that till the warrenty fails and then come up with some excuse to replace the transmission.....try taking it to other places or other dealerships.

Contact Ford and let them know of your concerns. There should be a number and address in the back of your owners manual for something like "problem resolution".

I would call and follow up with a letter. Document everything.

Truenofan has got it right. Remember that your enemy right now is the dealer. You can piss them off all you want, but at this point you want to clearly and calmly state your concerns to Ford. It wouldn't hurt to tell them that after driving imports X number of years that your experience thus far with a domestic product has been less than stellar. It doesn't have to be the whole truth, but I guarantee it will get their attention.

Ford is fighting for their very existence right now. They're going to want to keep any customers they have happy.

Having said all that, a different dealership is a great suggestion. Myself, I'd like to find an owner with the same year, engine and transmission combination and see if they are having the same problem. I'd bet they're not.

Why wouldn't the dealership want to fix it and get paid for the warranty work?

They basically think I'm just being picky and/or delusional. Yet, every single one of my friends can detect the noticeable difference in operation noise while in that gear.

They also tell me that if they take the transmission apart and I'm just hearing things it's basically an $80 charge for their trouble.

They don't get as high of a yield for warranty work.

This is the kind of thing I would document. All the domestic auto manufacturers are in the process of eliminating and/or consolidating dealerships right now. Their attitude may have to do with them being affected by that.

I would let Ford know know about their attitude and find another dealership. This can't be a common issue or they would be well aware of it. The dealer network is well informed of common issues on car models. You hear it, your friends hear it, the dealership pleads ignorance of a problem. Something's rotten in Denmark or just at that dealership.

I've been up there multiple times and the most recent ride along tech did agree with me, but I didn't have time to deal with it then.

I figured I'd post to see if it's worth having the transmission disassembled.

Is there any way I can protect myself from their "diagnostic fee" if they say I'm hallucinating?

Any ideas on what the cause may be? They have said it would take them probably a day or so to disassemble transmission............Not worth the trouble if it's a non-issue.
