Ive gone thro 3 power supplies in less than 2 years. 2 of them were Ultra's(not the greatest), and the latest 1 to die is a server class Antec Truepower. I have a surge protecter, but its a no-name Staples that I picked up on sale for $20. My question is: is there a problem with the circut in my room, or is my power bar working? Should I buy an APC? Thanks.
 
I did not have the heart to stomp on your happy bubble when you posted about buying an
Ultra. Do a search of GH for Antec and see what comes up. On this very page is a
Neo 480 that's overheating. Go to SPCR and read about Antec. Go to badcaps.net, look
through the PSU section.

Once a cheap ass surge protector does it's job a couple times, it will turn into a power
strip, offering no more protection than a short extension cord. A good surge protector
will have a light on it, telling you it's good to go.

How much money you got.? They do make line protectors that have AVR and surge protection.
So the expense of a UPS can be avoided. A passable UPS w/AVR can be had for around $100.

A decent Fortron can be had for about $70.

APC does have a VG resource section and FAQ. Check it out. You don't have to buy APC
but atleast look at what info they offer.

Have you read the stickied PSU thread in GH.? Have you searched GH for UPS threads.?
Much VG info has been offered over there on UPSs.

A month ago I bought a Belkin 1500 for $120 w/free shipping. I went this big because it
will support the rig and Mit 22"CRT for >5.5minuets. It has AVR.
I have a second UPS that's in need of batteries after 4 years. It has AVR.

I've been plugging my computers into a UPS for 5 or 6 years now. I hardly ever lose power, but I was sitting at my computer one day when the power flicked off and on several times in a short period of time (don't remember how many, but at least once was less than a second between having and not). Ever since I won't run my computers without one.

I went through several Enermax (server style 24p, when mobos didn't require them unlike now), and I finally bought a good UPS, and went dual PSU. That solved most of my problems. Part of the problems I had was due to the monitoring software itself. Now I don't have to worry about power issued, thankfully.

Yes, defintely buy an UPS. It seemed to help me a lot.
 
potato, are you sure the PSU is dead?? I was thinking over dinner and it occured to me
that you might have shorted out the PSU. It would need resetting. IIRC, turn it off at
the rear switch, then unplug it for awhile. If you did short it, this will reset the breaker.
Some PSUs have an internal fuse but I've never held or seen one.

If this makes it power-up, you had better find the short. Maybe a pinched or abrated wire.
It could be a thin(24AWG) fan wire or a fan that is shorting out internally. Good Luck.

Its been unplugged for about... 3 days. Won't boot now. UPS can be bought. Ive already unplugged all of the molexs and the 24 pin. Ill be back after 7, I have plans. But I'm gonna try the power supply on a quality Belkin power protector. If it runs, I konw theres a PICNIC going on...
