I just watched a program on female circumcision in the third world, It horrible, the young girls are forced to have it done
when they are like 10 or something. Does anyone know why this happens? Is it religious?

It's not religious at all. It's just a bizarre tradition that's been passed on. People continue to do it. Just because. At one time some tribes (Edit: Islamic tribes) may have done it for religious reasons, while others did it because they thought it was sanitary (see also: male circumcision).

People do it to their children because their parents did it to them. They don't know any better.

So it reduces the pleasure and the chances that they won't cheat on their husbands when their married. And yes, it's religious, I believe to prevent unfaithfulness.

This most extreme form, consists of the removal of the clitoris, the adjacent labia (majora and minora), and the joining of the scraped sides of the vulva across the vagina, where they are secured with thorns or sewn with catgut or thread. A small opening is kept to allow passage of urine and menstrual blood. An infibulated woman must be cut open to allow intercourse on the wedding night and is closed again afterwards to secure fidelity to the husband.

OH GOD. TMI

that depends on what you mean by "they dont know any better"
people could say the same about our culture relying on medication, slughtering of animals, etc.

That's exactly what I mean. I often make the comparison to dentistry. At the moment, we believe that going to the dentist and getting twice yearly cleanings, along with root canals, extractions, fillings, caps, etc. I have an implant which consists of a titanium screw anchored in my jawbone with a false tooth on top of it.

The practices are often painful, but we continue to subject ourselves to them because we believe that it's beneficial. In 500 years, it may be determined that dentistry has no real medical benefit, but many people will continue to go to the dentist because they either were not taught that dentistry was not helpful, or because they simply choose not to believe.

So is the case with female genital mutilation.
