Yea hes an idiot, but he's also right. Its not his policy that is giving the free modems and that will ultimately lead to higher rates. That is determined by what the market will bear out. And it's the company--it's a marketing strategy. If you don't like it then change providers, this guy is being smart by helping people get the most of the service they are paying for. He's playing into their hands, but what are you rohter options? Down the road they will do the upgrade anyway, but make you buy / rent the new modem. I am on RCN so this doesn't affect me.

I'm glad when I decided to stop paying Adelphia rent for a modem, I picked up a brand spankin' new Motorola SB5100, so I should be good for some time to come. :)

the funny thing is that I've had a DOCSIS 2.0 spec modem for TWO YEARS already, given to me by (drumroll) Time Warner themselves.

i could care less about going to 2.0 speeds - just up my downstream to 6.0 MBit to compete with SBC's DSL speeds.

/loves being 1/4 mile away from the satellite downlink
//loves having only ONE other subscriber on his trunk
///that last part sounded weird
////just realized that it actually sounds really gay
/////oh well

Upgrading to docsis 2.0 isn't going to change your speeds at all. Oh, are we talking cable or DSL? I'm confused... it's been too long since I've been in the business.

From here.

The CableLabs® Certified? Cable Modem project, also known as DOCSIS® (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification), defines interface requirements for cable modems involved in high-speed data distribution over cable television system networks. The certified cable modem project also provides cable modem equipment suppliers with a fast, market-oriented method for attaining cable industry acknowledgment of DOCSIS compliance and has resulted in high-speed modems being certified for retail sale.

Technical information regarding the different stadards, 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 can be found here.

Basically it's the standard cable modems use to communicate. Sort of like USB 1.1 vs 2.0...sort of.
