i just went to a gig of mem. put it in, then played some war3 for a couple hours.
then firgured id knock down the pagefile now. so i found a site, http://support.pcs-technology.com/Articles/XPPerformance.htm and did a few things off there.

what i did :
largesystemcache (nothing major)
the POSIX disable
and disabled several performance counters

i then changed the startup recovery section, to 'none' memory dump and unchecked "write and event to the system log" and "send an admin alert".
and finally removed the pagefile to my second drive, and added one to my c drive (i first tried to make only the second drive a 2/2 pagefile, but windows kept making a 1.5gig page on my C) and made it a 2/50.

then i rebooted. i noticed it taking longer and then it said userXXXX.exe failed to init. XXXX as in i dont remember the exact name. i then turned itself off. i booted again. this time is said lsass.exe (forgot what that is) error and turned itself off. i tried safe mode, it turned itself off. command promp, it turned itself off.

then i whipped out my xp disc and booted with it. it turned itself off. so i said f*** it and started a new install on a spare drive. it loads the drivers then right after 'starting windows' (mouse flashes the connect light) it turns itself off. ok, so it has to be hardware o_O.
so as a WTF, i reset the bios to safe defaults and it boots fine. let windows do the 1st part of its install. after 1st reboot i put the bios back. and it turns itself off. back into the bios, defaults, and only turn off peripheral crap. boots ok.

and thats where i am now. windows is installing now and on boots im gonna try to narrow it down. but this is the wierdest thing i have ever seen. O_O.
i'll post in a bit when i find 1 setting it is (or whatever)

Well, I'd reset the BIOS to default and re-install XP from scratch, seems the secret is the resetted BIOS....

Maybe you have some toasted hardware, perhaps your new memory is bad? Check it.

Fixed your problem yet?

It may be the timing on yoru memory. Try making the numbers higher, which slows it down a tiny bit. Also, your new RAM, does it require higher voltages? If so, I seen some that requires up to 2.8v (!)

First thing I would do is remove the new RAM, see if the problem goes away. If not, then try removing the old RAM. If you are overclocking at all, install Windows at stock speeds, get everything running and then start overclocking. If you are not overclocking, try making BIOS changes one at a time to try and find whichever it may be that may be causing problems.

Night, have you fixed your problem with Lsass.exe ??? My father who is completely computer illiterate has that problem and before I start messing with it I would like to know what you did to fix it! I think it is a windows security loophole that spyware or worm or virus uses to corrupt the system. There has to be a simple fix to this.

That's the Sasser worm that's going around.

thanks Nohr I figured it out after I posted that it was the Sasser worm. I knew it had to be a virus/worm.

What video card do you have night? Enablind LargeSystemCache on ATI systems will yield the results you stated. I had this happen twice. :(
