So I keep all my accounts and passwords on a spreadsheet saved to a 512mb usb thumb drive. As I was putting it a way, I dropped it to the floor. As I reached down to pick it up I then realize the cap popped off on impact. For the life of me I can't find the blasted thing. I've searched everywhere within a 10 feet radius looking all over and it's as if it never existed. :|

there is no USB thumb drive cap. It is not the USB thumb that drive goes missing, it is you.

Yea, I already gave up on it. It was the curiousity of where it could have landed that's killing me.

Here's an experiment for you sometime:
Take a basketball and a tennis ball, or better yet, a superball. Hold them a few feet off the ground, with the smaller ball on top of the basketball. Drop them at the same time.
The smaller ball will be blasted off, hopefully straight up and not into some valuable item. (Do this outside.)

Something similar may be at work with your thumbdrive - the falling drive might have transferred some of its momentum into the cap. If it's at all like my thumbdrive, the cap is really light compared to the rest of it, and it doesn't take a lot of force to make something really light fly really far. 10ft radius might not be enough.

I've lost the cap on my thumb drive as well. I just carry my thumb drive cap-less. Has been working fine for three years.

I lost mine somewhere in my car. I hate USB drives that isn't just one piece.

i've gotten numerous USB cables that just come with this cheap plastic cover on the end of it.. it fits perfectly on any male usb end... i'm sure you can use this type of cap for your usb drive, as it fits any usb end like that. buy a usb cable with a cap.. and voila, new cap.

edit: i'm pretty sure i've seen them on ipod usb wires, but im sure there are others too

edit #2: heres a link to a 150 of those plastic caps i'm talkin about for a cheap 99 cents.. $10 shipping charge tho.. still not bad $11 for 150 end caps:

link

edit #3: heres some nicer/more durable ones.. but a slightly higher price tag:

Get a flashlight and turn the lights off. Get on the ground and shine it parallel to the floor and see if you can find it that way :p

who cares, I haven't had the cap on mine for a year, and 2 weeks ago a threw it into a wall and broke all the plastic off so its just the PCB with flash chip and controller exposed and I carry it in my pocket everyday and it sill works fine. You DEFFINITELY don't need a cap (wtf do you think gonna happen without one?), and so far it seems like you don't need a plastic covering either.

EDIT: looks pretty much exactly like this right now.

My thumb drive is missing its cap and is horribly bent. But guess what... it still works fine.

This same thing happened to me with my iPaq stylus. It fell to the ground and because I didn't immediately follow it with my eyes, it took that few seconds to simply stop existing.

My USB drive looks like that too, I tried to paint my casing (it was some ugly white with pink tint and had a green label on it) and I cold never get it glued back together right so I just tossed the case halves. Works great.
