If I maximize the TV to full screen..the picture kinda sucks if I watch it up close...

Thats mostly because LCD's bring out the reality of SD broadcast.. your screen is 1920x1200 and broadcast TV is like 320x240 maybe? plus LCD's and SDTV just dont get along that well.. not sure the reason.

You get used to it after a while.

I use a ATI TV Wonder Elite with my 2005FWP and it works pretty good. I sure wouldnt mind the extra 4", but couldn't justify the extra 200-300 it was when I bought it.

so if the feed is HDTV (which I think I will have when I get the cable box), the picture should be flawless?

What tv card are you using? I'm thinking about getting one.

Hauppauge PVR 150 Media center edition
I like the Sapphire Theatrix card I bought. Non HD but that is fine with me. Makes for a nice budget HTPC that I made a few months ago.

How about an actual HDTV set? You nerds are jizzing all over your tiny LCD monitors from Dell. If you're going to watch TV or play games, do it the real way.

It'll look a whole lot better, but you'll need at least DVI or HDMI.. I dont know if component can even feed the whole resolution of HD..

That would require them to have jobs and their own place to put the equipment.

Frugal just means you can't afford something.

I'm not passing judgement, nor did I make the original statement about "doing it the right way", but with all the equipment you need for an htpc you're going to spend the better half of 2k.

Wow that is a bold statement. So somehow you can figure out my finances easily? STFU

frugal means you want to spend your money in the best way possible. it's the difference between buying a 6600GT from BB for some ridiculous price and buying a 6600GT in FS/FT

I was just making a general statement about the word "frugal", don't get your panties in a bunch. I don't care about your personal finances, nor is anything being implied. I'm not trying to offend your wallet. Get over it.

I'm just saying that when someone spends 75% of the cost of the "real deal", as RagingBitch said, on something that isn't really comparable to the "real deal" then calling it "frugal" is just.. well... I dunno.. a cop out.

how is being frugal a cop out? being frugal is simply a decision. Can I buy that 2k HDTV set? yes. But do I want to? No because I dont like spending that much money. That is being frugal. Frugal does not mean you cant afford something.

DScaler helps a lot more than you think...almost like "free Faroudja" for crappy signals.
