It pisses me off that the news in the US (from almost all sources) is so sensationalist that they report everything for ratings splendor.

Opinion polls in Palestine showed Hamas winning by a landslide before the election. US news sources have been reporting that for weeks. Yet, after the election, the same US news sources are reporting the Hamas victory as a 'stunning upset.' Every headline seems to have 'upset' in it.

It's not an upset just because their political views are not in line with the US political views when the election results are perfectly inline with predictions. Rather, imo, they're calling it an upset as 'propaganda' to US readers that this can only be a bad thing.

I, for one, have heard so much sh1t talked about Hamas that I can't wait to see what they actually do. If a former terrorist group turn political party decides to rely less on terrorism and more on traditional political means for change, what the hell is so bad about that? I actually would rather see Hamas do something good for once. However, the US news says this will 'throw the mideast into turmoil'.. Well WTF is it already?

BTW, I am a conservative in the US.. But, I think there's a big difference between Hamas terrorists and Hamas the political party.. Anything against the US is called a 'terrorist' right now.

Every thing I had read indicated Hamas would do well but not sweep the elections.
"one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter"
It may be good for us to remember that.
It may also be good for us to remember that Hamas may be the only group that could really make peace with Israel if they so choose.
Sort of a "only Nixon could go to China" thingy.

PBS news a few days ago showed the Fatah party leaders talking about where they went wrong and it showed a bunch of Palestineans talking about how Hamas would win clearly. Then, the narrater even said Fatah knew it would lose in a landslide.

Also, opinion polls showed overwhelming support.

Where are these opinion polls prior to the election? I wasn't aware of any that said Hamas would win with a landslide.

This is the same group that constantly says Israel should be destroyed. You really can't see that this can't be good for the region?

What are you talking about? Aljazeera.net is reporting it as an upset as well.

Good chance for Hamas to now show if they actually care about the people or are all hot air.

All know that it is not wise to antagonzie Israel; Hopefully Hamas goes not continue to believe that they "drove" Israel out of Gaza.

If Hamas as a"official" government entity chooses to continue their attitude; look for another Lebanon situtation to come out of it.

Remember Arafat cowering in his compund begging for Western help;
This time there will be no Arafat to beg for media attention.

Maybe Hamas will be wise; I doubt it based on their track record; Arafat did not change his spots; anyone that tries will be in trouble with their radical base.

The losers could be the Palestinian people that will be set back 20 years if Hamas continues along their path to destruction

what the hell is so bad about that?

Well Arafat's party was a former terrorist group as well and all they did was continue to help with the oppression of their own people for personal gain.

This is a good thing IMO because now Hamas has to actually deal with real issues for their own people and cant rely on using Israel for a scapegoat.

Either they stop the terrorist side of things and actually do something or they will be voted back out of power soon enough.

I welcome this outcome because it cuts to the chase and will force a certain outcome for Hamas.

Edit:btw Hamas winning was no surprise at all. This has been known for months.

How so?

Frankly I think they'll intensify the blame campaign. This will ensure that they don't lose any power any time soon.

I don't believe you have an accurate grasp of what the Palestinian territories are like. I think the only imperative for Hamas now, is to cooperate with external groups to bring about an open war in the region. They can't possibly stay in power if they deal with Israel - that's not what they were elected to do.

I caught Nightline or some crap on ABC and the unknown to me reporter had a Senior hamas leader and a winner in the elections on and he actually asked good hard hitting questions. The hamas guy almost pulled a AK-47 on him via satellite! He was pissed funny stuff. The reported just kept asking the same question. And the Hamas guy just talked the same talking points but in a pissed off fashion.

How can the guy have an accurate grasp of what the Palestinian territories are like? How can you?

I'm trying to say that this news, like all news on Palestine (and the region for that matter), is skewed toward an idealogy that Israel is not warlike and Palestinians and other Arabs are warlike terrorists.

For us to understand anything about the region, we have to read between the lines, take things with a grain of salt, and weigh reporting of actual events higher than sensationalist reporting..

You know, the Bush admin and the right called Arafat a terrorist and didn't want to deal with him, and now they get Hamas. Well, if they don't want to deal with Hamas in the next few years, they may get a more radical version of Hamas.

Why can't people just recognize that there is blood on everyone's hand, Palestinian, Israelis AND American as well as any western countries involved. There were conflict in that region, huge conflict, and during conflicts, people die.

It's time for people to get over the past, stop labeling each group terrorists, and start real conversation.
