It's a PCI card that creates a hard drive out of PC133 SDRAM.

In otherwords a HD that's access time is measured in micro seconds rather than milliseconds, and whose throughput is limited by the PCI bus.

there is another manufactuere that has the same thing but also has an internal battery (like the CMOS battery) that powers it off so your data is safe when your transporting hte system around.

If I had teh money I would jump to it.

Stargate got one (not sure for trial or otherwise bought it). but they dont know how to use it and I have since left the company.

Unfortunately this appears to be a 32 bit/33 MHz PCI card, so burst transfer is limited to 133 MB/s.

I'm slightly confused, however, why the sustained transfer rate is so low. 80-100 MB/s?

Even ancient PC100 SDRAM is more than capable of filling a 32 bit/33 MHz PCI bus.

the one we have at stargate is capable of running 64bit 33mhz.. (backward to 32bit 33mhz).

It runs great but those guys havent stress tested it.

Back at STMicro we played around with a few Quantum Rushmores. There were two versions. One was a flash memory drive that retained data if the driver was powered down. The other used PC100 and had a bigass lithium ion battery pack to supply juice should the power go down.

Of course, to populate the RAM drive, you're going to have to read from your pokey ATA133 or SCSI setup anyway. And then leave your computer on 24/7.

I'm not really sure what performance benefit you'd get without doing predominantly I/O bound tasks, anyway.
