Chows are quite similar in temperament to pitbulls which may be a good thing or not, depending on your point of view.

Chows are great looking dogs, but are a difficult breed to own. They are very territorial and protective, which can result in attacks with a novice owner.

Actually I do not agree. Pitbulls tend to be nice and playful dogs that have a tendency to go whacko and bite or kill someone. All the Chows I have even known were one person/family dogs and highly unpredictable. They are the only dog I do not trust at all. My brother the vet feels the same way.

I have had multiple friends that have always had Chows and being a person who animals love I have never had a good experience with any of the Chows. One friend had a male that would be sitting on the couch right next to me wanting me to pet him and then a moment later would essentially turn on me. Same experience with another friend and his two Chows. One was nice (only if he was around) and the other was completely crazy and unpredictable no matter what.

A male Chow that was running loose actually came onto my property with me and my female Boxer out front and went right for her. She was three legged but completely kicked his ass. I thought she was injured from all the blood...but it was all his.

Considering all my experiences and those of my brother a loose Chow is the only dog I will call the authorities on at the same time making sure any kids get out of the street. I would have no problem shooting one, and I love animals. They are horrible dogs.

We have a chow chow-retriever mix dog, got from a shelter, we didn't know what it was to begin with.

It was quite hard to train, but I expected way too much, when compared to my German shepherd.

It is such a loving dog, very much like a cat, loves to be touched 24 hours a day. It gets hot very easily, lays on the tiled floor a lot.

I think any dog can be a perfect dog if brought up properly, just like human children. Some dogs are more physically capable of certain actions, that is what you have to be careful with.

For my personal anecdode, a brother's friend down the street had a pet chow and they got rid of it after a couple years when it tore a large gash in the kid's foot.

Who cares though? Them puppiez so cuuuuuute.

lol that dog totally does not give a crap what the vet is doing to it.

It's not like when I bring my cat to the vet and it takes like 3 of us to hold it down just for the vet to check her teeth. lmao

Caucasian Shepherd puppies are cute also. They will also tear you limb from limb when they get older. :|

I swear Chows bite more often than Pit Bulls; I remember the vet I used to volunteer for absolutely hated them. Cute though.

I witnessed a Chow mix tearing an 8yo boy's scalp off when I was 11yo. He needed plastic surgery. I helped catch him:

His name was "Blitz." His owners once accused my twin brother and I of tormenting him while he was in his pen, but we never did anything like that. We only played with him by tossing his ball or petting him when he'd climb over the 6+ foot gate to come play.

A VERY fluffy neighborhood dog named "Ginger," which looked even more like a chow than Blitz did (had the tell-tale blue blotchy tongue too), was free to go through the neighborhood and... wasn't fixed. She had her first heat cycle while she was still what most would call a puppy and soon had a pack of dogs following her, including Blitz, who no longer went home after escaping his pen.

Being mixed with a much larger breed, Blitz was the biggest dog by far and easily fended off the other males. When this 8yo boy bent down to hug the fluffy puppy, he was just another male attempting to mount her as far as Blitz was concerned.

I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to coax Blitz to come to the Animal Control people. It was my calling and ball tossing that eventually got his neck in their loop. The ensuing struggle was even more violent than the attack on the boy, but at least they had him.

I wrote my first "To Who It May Concern" letter and sent it to court. The boy was all bloodied and believed that BOTH dogs attacked him. "The big dog bit me on the head and the brown dog bit me on the nose." Either his mom coached him to say that to sue both irresponsible dog owners or he mistook Ginger's concerned licking of his wounds as a "bite."

growing up one of my friend's next door neighbors had one. it scared the shit out of everyone even though it was behind a fence and on a leash. the thing was vicious. As a kid I wouldn't get anywhere near it. I think the owners were morons though.

You are correct, they might be the most head strong dog there is. They are not for novice dog owners.

When we went to the pound to find a dog the place was full of Chows. One of the volunteers said that it was pretty typical. People thought the fluffy puppies looked cute but when they got bigger they started getting more aggressive. Apparently some of them would try and take a piece out of the volunteers if given the chance.

Cute puppies but can grow up to be little bastards who don't play nice and aren't dog-friendly.
