omg restoring from tape is slow

5MB/minute. really?! wow. Stupid users need to stop randomly deleting their files and waiting a month to tell us about it. Shadow copy normally works great for restores... for files that arn't a freaking month old. FML! Could be worse I guess. At least I HAVE a job. 😛

LMAO...tape...

I think we ship our backups offsite every so often. The one time I needed something old restored, it just so happen to be on the truck to the offsite..in another state..

We use hard disks. Disks are so cheap now there really is no need to be restoring from tape. I have a backup server at work with 30T of space. I also burn a copy onto another seperate disk for offsite.

We've got some fancy schmancy bank of LTO4 robot loaded drives here. Work great, even for gigantic restores – sometimes in the 50G+ range.

I feel your pain.

tape is pretty terrible... we still use it for some clients who insist on it (mostly because they want to have their tapes shipped out to Iron Mountain or something), but disk is better in nearly every conceivable way.

Wait until you are on tape 9 of 10 and the drive can't read it.
or
Your tape robot loader track jumps a tooth, won't load or eject any tapes and you eventually have to take it apart to get all of the tapes out.

Good times. Good times...

When I was a youngster, my very first computer was a Coleco Adam, which only had a tape drive. Total piece of crap, but it was from my parents so I didn't pick it out. I got some game for it, which was like a nethack type game. When you went to save your game, it literally took 15 minutes. Think the tape had to keep rewinding from one end all the way to the other over and over again. Anytime people talk about tape drives taking long, I always think back to that POS Adam.

Yes, and watching tape and listening to tape suck as well. Your problem is why the mighty ZIP drive was invented!

What kind of tape are you restoring from? 5Mb/min seems a little low. We restore GB's of data in a matter of minutes.

Why not switch to HDD off site backups? Much cheaper and faster from what I can figure.

If it was my say, that's what it would be. It's what I use at home and it's flawless.

There was also an issue where for whatever reason instead of restoring what I selected it restored the ENTIRE BACKUP DIRECTLY TO THE SERVERS. Now I can really say it, FML. This would not be an issue with hard drives. "oh look there's the folder I want" *copy, paste*. No special software. with all that I never got the folder I wanted lol. This will be a fun day...

LTO4. The speed eventually increased to 40MB/min though, but at first it was 5MB/min. after the disaster I mentioned above, I'm kinda glad it was slow... lol
