Bird-like radio-controlled airplanes that flap their wings. Perhaps it's time for me to graduate from my Aero Ace to one of these? :)

I have got to get one of those things by next summer. Imagine getting one in black, waiting until dark and flying it barely over the heads of a beach filled with people waiting for the fireworks to start. Have a shill yell "Giant bat!!!!" and there would be mass hysteria.

It doesn't look like they fly very well. After the initial climb after the throw, they lose altitude until they crash.

OK, so do they do anything besides go up in the air a few feet, then crash?

I'm guessing you didn't watch the Cybird video.

You're right.

I just did, and that seems to fly well.

If I got one, I wouldn't make it look like a bird, I'd try to make it look like a giant insect. That way it would freak people out and possibly induce projectile vomiting.

I thought I read in a journal that we didn't understand 'flapping' flight well enough to build this sort of thing yet?..

They wanted to make tiny insect-like robots with extremely simple and discreet flight mechanisms (i.e. not a helecopter) for survailence purposes, but they couldn't replicate a bees wings, even after months of work.
