Again, it is not in his control. It is apparently a university thing, probably for state aid. I guess I should have been suspicious when he never took attendance and I never signed a sheet.

Explain this. How did you miss the attendance sheet every time for the first few weeks of class?

If I knew, I wouldn't be in this hole would I? I assume people just skipped me. When I say first 2 weeks, its 4 days basically.

Yeah, that's four times your classmates would have somehow not passed the attendance sheet to you AND four times you somehow did not realize there was an attendance sheet being passed around. That doesn't pass the smell test. Were you sleeping?

Maybe I was too busy freaking out because I didn't understand a single thing my professor said to notice the sheet.

how big is your class? seems like a dick move on the profs part (i'm used to relatively small classes though). at least you got the W instead of an F.

Why didn't you sign the sheet in the beginning?

With you now hoping for a better grade I seriously think you are of the new student types that have learned if you beatdown a professor in their office each day (bonus for sending in your parents) they will usually give in.

Really? Great advice, I might try it some day. Sure beats studying 30 hours a week for a 4 credit course to only get a B-.

huh? you are still defending your failures?

If you truly spent 30 hours on almost any course offered and only got a B- that should explain much more than you understand.

At least at my school, when the professor takes attendance during the first few class sessions it's not just to stroke his ego. Many students decide not to take a course they've signed up for, but don't bother to officially withdraw until the drop/add deadline, several weeks into the semester. By automatically dropping students who don't show up to class in the first weeks, it makes room for students stuck on the waitlist.

That's how it was at my school too. The professors usually didn't give a shit about attendance, but for classes where there was a seat shortage it was their way of getting the non-attenders out and the wait-listed people in.

Good luck fighting this - don't give up on it without trying every venue.

That seems awfully unreasonable. Maybe this is some school policy.

This doesn't make sense, I mean I know that professors drop students who do not sign in the first 2 weeks of class, but they DROP the students. Because its during the first few weeks and before the deadline to drop without a W, they do not even get a W, much less an F. You never get a grade because you were never there. Getting an F would mean you DID attend the first 2 weeks because in order to get an F you need to be enrolled in the class and in order to be enrolled you would have to be there the first few weeks. Maybe the professor just hates you.

I always make sure to ask if the professor took attendance if I am not sure because people are often retarded and do not pass the sign in sheet around.

So I managed to get a grade for the course and sign up for next semester's course. Final grade was a B, I did better in the final than I expected.

Related story I withdrew from an elective programming class that had a similiar name to a core class I was taking, but the secretary that pushes the paper screwed up. I got a test back in the class I was still taking that said "uh, you don't take this class?" Luckily, I had copies of the paperwork and showed it was their mistake and they fixed everything and my teacher still had all my grades so I wasn't screwed.

Update:
Ok I got a response from the professor. It was in fact not his fault but mine. Apparently, I didn't sign an attendance sheet the first 2 weeks so he marked me as never attended. He will not give me credit for the course, but he has the power to change the Not Attended to Withdrawn which is not an F. I will need to take the same class again and it is not offered in the spring. FML! UGH.

Hey, on the bright side, I might get a better grade. I was almost certainly going to get a B- in that class. I might be able to boost it up to a B.

I'm confused. How can he give you a grade but not credit?

So you still have to retake and pay again for a course that you got a B in?

No, everything got resolved. All it cost was a 100 dollar round trip ticket via greyhound and 20 hours of my life.
