Many months ago I was a Anandtech member. At some point during an OS change, or dsl modem upgrade or ???my access to the Anandtech forums permanently changed. Prior to that, I had no problems surfing the forums as quickly as any other web page.
Well now I?m back and would like to solve the problem. Page load times have slowed to a crawl. In fact, it took almost 5-minutes to load this page to post a message.

Other symptoms include:

Strange script when pages do not load such as:

Content-type: text/html Page-Completion-Status: Normal Page-Completion-Status: Normal Page-Completion-Status: Normal

<META NAME="AUTHOR" CONTENT="Anand Lal Shimpi">
<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="motherboards; intel; amd; pentium; nvidia; 3dfx; matrox; athlon; pentium 3; RAM; RAMBUS; SDRAM; video cards; hardware; processors; news">

Also,
My browser will continue to try to load the page, but often after several minutes if I hit the stop button, the page (or most of it) will load.

And,
This is strange, when I tried to rejoin the forums yesterday, every time I got to the final page to submit my information, I would get the IE ?page cannot be displayed? thing. That night when I went to work, I thought I would rejoin the forums there, then access it from home later. When I tried to join it told me that someone was already using that information?.in other words, it accepted the information even though it only showed the ?page cannot be displayed? page.

Also,
I have seen no change in my dsl connection so I do not think speed is an issue.
I have had NO similar problems with any other web pages including other forums.
I am using Win XP pro, IE 6, XP firewall off, and ZoneAlarm pro 3.0.081 Can?t think of any other relevant info.

I Can?t take it anymore!!! Plz HELP
Please don?t tell me to search this topic...I might not have the months that would take!

I connect to this forum using a T1 at work , my pc here is a pos P1 200 running over a Coaxial network (oldie or what) and I quite frequently have trouble getting certain pages to load as fast as other sites do , but the sheer volume of traffic that this site generates and not just the forums either (aka Anandtech.com) tends to really slow things down .

Also there are many other things to consider such as the servers themselves , the network the servers are on , your connection and the way it is routed here , plus the massive hits this site sustains .

My F5 key on my Kboard gets the most usage along with my backspace :D on this site !

Thanks for the feedback GAZZA, but I believe there is much more to it than that. For instance:

Up until about 4-5 months ago I had no problems with the forum. It ran as smoothly as it is running now from work. During the span that things went bad, I went through an OS change, MB/CPU/RAM upgrade and DSL modem change. Unfortunately I don?t know which if any might be causing the problem.

Also consider the script I talked about in my last post. I NEVER saw that before things got slow and screwed up. Quite often when I?m in the forums and hit my ?back? browser button, all I get is a page full of script. If I keep going back, I will get script until it backs clear out of Anandtech!!!!

Definitely not a speed/congestion/server issue.

Well as regarding the script I was getting a lot of errors when I went back to using Win2k using this site , it wasn't until I upgraded IE that it sorted the problem out , I was even getting the error in Opera as well .

Here is my post regarding that issue Here

GAZZA, thx again for the feedback, your link described some familiar symptoms... ie. the part about using the stop button to load the page before it "lags".

However, (and i'm not trying to be a butt :))

It worked before and now is doesnt...what changed?
It works at work (there now), but not at home...both broadband connections.
I don't just get script at the top of the page, 75% of the time I get nothing but script.
And finally, and I can't stress this point enough...at home the AnandTech site is bacisally unuseable. I might get to view a single page after 10 minutes of going in and out, back and foward! It's insane! There has to be something actually wrong on my end.

Any more ideas?

Last night after returning from work I ran "system restore" hoping to correct what I thought was an unrelated problem. My access to the forums is now workable...slow but workable.

Brad maybe a stab in the dark but do you have QOS installed or running on your network adapter properties ?

Also go and run Ad Aware and clean out any spyware you may have unknowingly !
