Last weekend i spent an entire day pulling weeds out of my lawn, it was a horrendous pain in the ass. I counted ~850 of those weeds with orange flowers on them, my lawn was infested and it looked bad compared to the neighbors. so i pulled them out (which sucked really bad) filled in the holes with potting soil and i overseeded the lawn. I fertilized this last sunday and the lawn is growning like crazy, i had a big dead patch that just wouldn't grow anything no matter how much i watered it and now it has sprouted all this new grass practically in 24-48 hours. I am freaking out!

i'll take pics later as it was too dark out tonight when i got home.

woot all that work paid off. now to just get those clover patches to go away.

edit: the lawn is now really full and thick, the new roots have taken and the lawn looks great! horray! (now i just have to keep it that way)

Your grass is growing
How nice for you
Green, green grass
And a flower or two

You pulled the weeds
And worked so hard
Sweat dripped into your eye
And when winter comes, it'll all wither and die

Congrats on your temporary victory over mother nature!!!!!

Make sure you put the appropriate fertilizers so that you can avoid those things before they start spreading next time

I do most of the fertilizer stuff and we stick with Scotts everytime, we tried some off brands but it's not just worth it

i will make sure the lawn doesnt get this bad. it should stay green over the rainy season here in seattle and it should be a lot healthier.

 Good luck. I was just being a jerk...it's easy for me. :p A nice lawn takes a lot of work. I'm more of the Xeroscape (sp?) type of guy. My front yard will consist of a cactus, surrounded by solid concrete. Instead of mowing, weeding, trimming and edging every week, I will Powerwash the concrete every six months. :D

It hasn't been mowed in a year :(

Heavy duty mower and remove the cut grass, fertilize and cut it every week leaving the cut grass on the lawn.

If you had a neighbor like me, it would have been mowed, lol :p

A guy lived behind us unti his company had some troubles, kept leaving and coming back from time to time for maybe a year, obviously he didn't care about his lawn. It got to a point where my dad spoke with a neighbhor who had talked about it already, we agreed that we would mow the lawn, someone else would put weed killer, etc. We did it after we got his permission though, it was just getting annoying to see a patch of weeds in a huge area surrounded by people who take care of their lawns

I'm sure you cared :p Have a :cookie: if you read it

You think weeding is hard work?
Try spending an entire weekend removing rocks from the bare dirt around your house, then another entire weekend moving 10 tons of topsoil by wheelbarrow and shovel, then another full day leveling, seeding, rolling, and top dressing a yard.

Just one of the drawbacks of buying new construction and refusing to pay a couple thousand dollars to have someone else plant the lawn and do the landscaping.

EDIT: Oh, and then spending a full day pulling crabgrass out a couple months later.

Tip of the day: If you need to put in a new lawn, do it in the fall, NOT in the spring.

Just a few lawn tips to help you keep it looking nice.

Don't over water your new grass. It will survive the winter better if the roots grow deeper in to the ground, and lots of water encourages the roots to stay at the surface. Give it a few days between waterings to dry out, but don't overdo it.

Sharpen your mower blade, and mow the new grass high. Dull mower blades will only rip the grass up, and new grass will come out at the roots.

Use a pre-emergant herbicide next spring to keep the weeds from even sprouting in your lawn.

Not bagging your clippings is some of the best ferilizer you can put on your lawn, although if you want t super nice, thick lawn you almost have to bag. I recommend leaving them on the ground.

But it is also the best way to spread any seeds from weeds that have gone to seed on your lawn. If you have no weeds then mulching is good. If you have weeds then bad, especially with Creeping Charlie/Henbit.

Right now is the best time of year to overseed.

Particularly, aerate then overseed.
