For shoplifting! :Q:disgust::Q:frown::Q:(:Q:|:Q

From Fred Meyers. She is now banned for life from all Fred Meyer stores. :( That sucks. There is a FM right down the street, and we [used to] shop there about every other day. *bonks her on the head*

I can't believe it. I don't know what she was thinking. Apparently, neither does she. She doesen't know why she did it. It was just a 10$ pack of markers. I wish she would've just said that she wanted them, sigh... I have no idea what made her think she could get away with it. There are cameras everywhere. Maybe she had a brain anurism.

I don't really know what to think. It's so unlike her, I'm basically flabbergasted. In a way it makes me feel like I don't even know her, heh.

I highly doubt she will ever do it again, lol.. I think getting caught, spending 6 hours in the county jail, and then being stranded in Oregon City until 1am was punishment enough. I called a cab out to pick her up, 22$.

I don't think the reality of her being an adult had set in yet(even though she turned 19 on the 2nd:confused: ), but it definately has now, now that she's had a little dose of reality. And a permanent record.

She got hit with Theft 2, which is a misdemeanor. She also has a 380$ fine. :Q All for a 10$ pack of pens. Bah!

*bonks her on the head again*

Anyway... She has court in a month. I have absolutely no experience with anything like this, but how should she proceed? Obviously, she is guilty. But is there anything she can do to maybe get the fined lessened? Like community service? Probation? Anything? 380$ is a lot of money, and I've already said I refuse to help her pay it if she has to, but I would like to know the options or at least a little about how these matters work.

I guess I don't watch enough Law & Order Theft Unit. :p

Also, about the blacklisting from all Fred Meyer stores.. I wonder if there is anything she can do about that? I really like Fred Meyer stores, and I feel sad that we aren't going to be able to shop there anymore. Do you think she could write a formal letter of appology or anything like that and be able to go there again?

:(

dang....... That's all I can say. Maybe she can get it stricken off her record or something.

Wow...just tell her to beg for the court's mercy, seeing as how it's her first offense and she's so young. Then again, being so young could hurt her, if the judge sees her as a potential risk of shoplifting more stuff.

Good luck, just good luck.

Well, too bad cuz it will stay in her record (assuming she's found guilty) and a lot of prospective employers will do a background check and not hire her solely based on this one tarnish. Someone I know who qualifies academically and etc. was offered a few financial analyst positions in big firms but all turned him down after the background check.

If she did it this time, she's done it before too, at least statisically speaking. I think there's an aspect of her you really don't know about my friend. I'd dig deeper on this aspect of her.

I dont mean to be mean, but... well, she did it. she is not a child any more. She has to learn responsibility. I know we all do stupid things, but sometimes they catch up with you. Hopefully, she has learned her lesson.

Good Luck, i am sure she is upset, so, be nice to her!

Be nice to her??? I'd dump the thief. Who knows what else she's been into and just hasn't been caught.

Eli, I can help you with this.

First of all, is this her first offense? If do, there is a 99% chance they are going to let her off with a small fine and community service.

Hire an attorney. I know you said she is guilty, but an attornry would probably charge about $700-$1000 and depending on how well he knows the judge, could get the entire thing dropped.

As for the rest of them saying she won't get a job? Ha, that's laughable. First of all, it's a misdemeanor. 8/10 job applications say "Please list any felonies in the past 5 years." The other 2 will ask for misdemeanors and felonies.

I got a Public Intox (misdemeanor) when I was 19 and I have been hired for 3 very nice jobs since then (I'm 21 now). Don't worry about it. Just get a decent attorney and get it taken care of.

That's just the thing. She's always been mrs. goody twoshoes, all the way up until I met her.. :p I mean sure she's stolen things before, but only when she was like 6 and didn't really know better.

I know what you mean though. It does make me feel like I don't know her as well as I thought, because it was just so out of the blue...

I'm not going to dwell on it, she was pretty tramatized by the whole thing. The handcuffs left marks on her wrists. :p I honestly don't think she will do it again.

I don't really want to dwell on the fact that she shoplifted, I'm pretty sure whatever punishment she has comming and has already gotten will be enough. I just want to figure out how to go about the court stuff. She is willing to do anything if she doesen't have to pay the 380$.

It can be expunged from her record after a certain ammount of time. Of course, it will still be there, but it is sealed, and a normal background check won't pull it up. They could if they wanted to, though.

She needs to get in touch with the public defender who is handling her case.

She needs to ask for a plea bargain.

Usually this consists of probation and community service.

The public defender should instruct her to plea no contest ... as opposed to guilty.

Get on this NOW, you only have a few weeks before arraignment, right ....

Yep, at least they haven't caught her for that, yet.

Just face the judge, pay the fine and get on with your lives. There are other stores. It's probably better if you can't shop at that one because it will be a constant reminder for her of her fvck up. Oh, and no more of The OC for her...

Thanks.

We don't have that kind of money though. I know it would be worth it, but we just don't.

It is indeed her first offense.

As for all you people giving half or one sentence responses, shrug. I have nothing to say to you. I expected as much from ATOT, but I figured I would at least get a couple good responses.

And to think, if you paid the $22 cab fair, you definately could have spotted her the $10 for the markers :(

Doesn't she have any credit cards?? The interest would have been worth more than the embarrassment & fines/fees.
