<< Did he got laid off or fired? There's a difference there. If he got fired (for violating company policy, etc) he may not be entitled to a severance package. If he got laid off, then a severance package should be in order.. if not, he should talk to a lawyer. >>

He got fired due to job cuts, not fraud or any other sh|t, so there is no severance package. My Dad isn't worrying, he made a lot at Sun, over 6 figures so he saved a whole crapload of money because he new that they were firing ppl and he had a instinct that he was next bc of his a$$hole boss. Thank god my Dad is a smart guy.......🙂

By 'job cuts' I assume you mean layoffs. Layoffs typically include severance packages. If not, that leaves you dad open to do whatever he wants.

Plus, a lot of his friends are going to try to pull some string to get him back in a fvck this guy over. I guess I have to hope for that but in the meantime I've got to cut my expenses, probably nothing won't change, just my Dad is going to be home all the time. 😛 Ah, I need something to make me happy.......

My brother works for Sun also. He's worried.

Sorry for your hard time. Hope it works out for you and your family.

No, I think it was just a reason for my Dad's boss to fire him, that is what he is thinking. My Dad's best friend there told him to get a Lawyer and see what he can do. It isn't fair in my opinion, I just don't understand.......🙁

People always say that is their boss, because they don't like them. But if theres a few thousand people being released, chances are its not a personality conflict. Maybe if he was friends with he boss, he would have a job a little longer, but once the next round of layoffs comes along, he could be included in that too. Corporate world is tricky. Just remember one thing, executives look out for other executives, thats it. If that wasn't the case, we wouldn't be hearing about companies such as Enron, Arthur Andersen, Global Crossing, Nortel, Qwest, and other Fortune 500 companies. Take a look at F---edcompany.com and read about it all. Its the same case with every company. Just the way things are...

I understand what you are saying man but this was a total shock to me. My Dad had never got fired in his life and always left on good terms without any problems. But the best thing is that he can always work for the competitor and they would hire him in a instant - IBM. 😀 My Dad would be more than happy to fvck over Sun for what they did to him.

You're getting your terms mixed up. Getting fired is different from getting laid off. Your dad can draw unemployment until he can get another job. Have him start looking quickly though...encourage him. If he wasn't the only one cut there may be a flooded job market for his field. Tell him if he wants to work a Help Desk job in Chattanooga, I can hook him up. (I just doubt he'd wanna take a cut in pay like that) I wish you and him the best of luck...

This sucks, I have had it happen to me before and its not fun. Well at least he was smart enough to save some money first. Collect unemployment, and you can use Cobra to cover your health insurance (expensive though). Good luck to your family.

<< That really sux.. but if he has 6 yrs of experience. Openings are showing up here and there. >>

Even in this kind of economy?!

welcome to the club, sucks doesn't it?

Just hope your dad doesn't have a heart attack next week like mine did (he got laid off in october and had his second heartattack a week later🙁)

Now that sucks. :Q

IT DOES SUCK! I DON'T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE UNTIL HE GETS A NEW JOB! :|

Technically you do. It's called COBRA. Your father may have to pay around $300-$400/month to get COBRA, but your family will get the same coverage you had before through Sun...and it's typically much cheaper than looking for coverage on your own.

Layoffs can be scary because they represent sudden change and insecurity. Just realize they are "natural" and few people make it to retirement without getting laid off at least once. I got laid off early in 2001 and it was the first for me. I was upset for a variety of reasons, of course, but I personally found a job a month afterward. Your father will find new employment again. We are probably emerging from this recession thing, so things should look better before they look worse.

Your father should also receive a severence package. I got laid-off from a dotcom and although I only had 6 months service, I received 2 weeks of pay as a severence. Your father may receive a month or two of pay. IN FACT, it is possible that your father could find a job sooner than the severence runs out, technically making him "profit" from this unfortunately situation.

Don't take this out on yourself, Daniel. Just worry about school and living as a teenager...you'll be in the working world soon enough.

We went through the same thing last summer. My dad who had been working for a company for 8+ years was fired, and because he was making so much money and kids now a days coming out of college will work cheaper it was very hard for him to find another good job. I hope you dad has better luck...

Why are you so worried? I mean I would be too but if your dad was making 6 figures, you guys aren't gonna get evicted tommrow. Is health insurance THAT important? You don't goto the doctor everyday.

that sucks,

but from what you are describing it is layoffs so he must get a severance package or he has the right to give away secrets of the company. But for the severence package he signs a deal not to give away secrets from the company

That's what I was thinking, but you know, some families don't know what the word save means...whether that applies here or not I don't know.

My Dad had sooo many phone calls today it wasn't even funny. His old good friends calling them trying to help him a lot. His old boss who was a really nice guy and misses my Dad as a employee is now CIO of Harris! :Q So, he may go back to Harris and work at Corp and probably make more money! 😀
