From Mac OS Rumors:

<< Several sources who have provided spot-on reports about prototype Macs (including the original
iMac, the first iBook, and the PowerMac G4) are now reporting that proof-of-concept PowerMacs
with developmental G5-class PowerPC processors from Motorola have been demonstrated to at
least two of Apple's strategic partners.

The enclosures, motherboards, and components are all based on Apple's UMA-2 chipset -- which
will ship with next-generation PowerMac G4s later this year -- sporting up to 200MHz Double
Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM memory, 8X AGP graphics bus, 800Mbps Firewire, and an ATA-100
IDE storage bus. These features have been seen in prototypes for over a year, however with the
exception of 8X AGP, which is a much more recent development and probably won't be seen in
shipping Macs until some time in 2002)....the big surprise is the reports that a functional PowerPC
7500 (G5) prototype chip is being tested in these latest prototypes.

According to the article, they're running at 1333 Mhz now and are expected at 2Ghz +.

All I can say is that it's about time Motorola made a chip that can hit 4 digits. :p 2000 Mhz would be impressive, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

IMHO, Motorola sucks. Had Apple stuck with IBM, we'd be running the 2Ghz Mac now. ;)

Sounds a little overblown, but it would definately help macs gain a little respect in my mind if they could compete with PCs in terms of speed. Still, application support and stability has a ways to go before a mac can ever really win me over.

I'll believe it when I see it..
Mac has been making these overblown promises for a long time.

hehe time for pc manufacturers to innovate a bit:p geforce 3 + g5 is gonna be ok. I really hate my cpu fan, and i really hate my ugly computer case. Stupid pc makers should solve those probs so there wouldn't be room for any mac envy

The problem with most PC cases and such is that the PC market is driven by people who care more about price than anything else.

This is why Apple has a lower market share. They charge what they want and don't care if you want a cheap machine.

I'll believe it when I see it.

That site has come up with some pretty wild sh*t over time and its very hard to believe them.

If am not not mistaken, they were predicting quad processor macs in jan2001...

and about the G5, the G4 Plus (which is used in the newest models AFAIK) was frist demo'ed in the fall of '99, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

We might see a g5 at around the same time we see the Hammer Family from AMD, in a year and a half at least.

it will be a while before the G5 comes out. the G3 chip hasn't even come to the end of it's lifespan yet and the G4 is still being perfected.

talk to many electrical engineers and they will tell you how ass backwards intels x86 architecture is. motorola has got their shiz right as far as assembly language and the like is concerned... but we all know which platform is more fun :)
