WTF? Not even 2 hours? Who the hell buys a laptop and only uses it for that short of time but needs that much power and a GeForce4 vid card?

I think some people just like the idea of having a laptop just in case they have to go somewhere and need their machine, but usually end up in some kind of docking station 99% of the time. Even when they go out with them, most people usually end up at places with alternate power anyway (car adapter, wall adapter.)

Bet that thing really gets pretty warm, wonder how bad it throttles back when playing a game. I wonder if that time is on a rating system..........😀. Like average load = surfing (~15%) Gaming @ 100% would give you what, like .25 hours or 15 mins.

Get a palm pilot and a desktop..........😀 J/K

bleh, way too big

i'll buy one of those laptops with those specs when it is in a .75 inch thick system with a 12.1 inch screen and has a reasonable battery time, but not until then.

Wasn't the idea behind a laptop that you could use it as a mobile computer?

This laptop pretty much defeats that goal.

Unless mobility is an absolute necessity, I am starting to realize that it's better off building a very high-end desktop for home and a sub-3-lbs notebooks like Sony VAIO SR or PictureBook.

The only times I need a notebook is when I'm up at Comdex doing demos or presenting something with PowerPoint.

Now I got so many goodies on my iPAQ and even a keyboard that my need for a notebook becomes less and less. Also, if I'm away to a place with a computer and a fast Internet connection, I can use Terminal Service, Remote Desktop or VNC (w/VPN) to my powerful desktop machine.

I can see how poeple would want a desktop replacement if nothing else but for the ability to put it in a drawer when you're not using it.

That fact alone makes a lot of people consider using this sytem.

And think of the fun if you spend a lot of time in hotels... I mean you don't HAVE to carry it in your briefcase. Just put it in your suitcase and you can pull it out and get in some frags lounging in your hotel room after a business meeting or some such.

Or maybe you just like to show off. 🙂

You can run Term Services from an iPAQ? I'm going to have to start looking into getting a handheld again....

BTW, I meant that if I'm off to a different location (i.e. doing a contract work at a different work site), I can usually grab a computer with high speed connection.

iPAQ does support Terminal Services, if you don't mind the 240x320 screen. It was introduced with the PocketPC 2002 OS.

SonicMobility

I met the Chief Gadgets Officer 😉 of the company and the man is loaded with all sorts of cool toys. Any ways, sonicadmin is a very neat software.

<< Still have my heart set on getting a Sony Vaio Picturebook... but that looks pretty cool >>

I thought about carrying both around. 🙂

PictureBook is small but not small enough to be as portable as iPAQ though. 🙂

Uh huh .. /me nods

I don't know about the sony picturebook, gonna have to check that out, but I know that I do want one of those i-books.. The 12" model is small and it has the best battery time (5 hours) .. it's also pleasing to the eye and I already run windows at home, would be nice to be able to run OSX too.

Careful with the iBook claim of 5 hours. That is possible only with the older OS, and even then rarely achieved. With OS X and it's "modern" memory architecture needing to constantly manage swap files, the battery life drops considerably. It's still better than a lot of Windows laptops though.

Any PocketPC 2002 device comes with Terminal Services client. And with add-on software, you can switch the PocketPC's screen resolution to 640x480 so you don't have to scroll the window.

For those complaining about the relatively short battery life . . . the solution is to carry a spare battery (or 2).

With a second battery, my Inspiron 4100 allowed me to watch TWO DVD movies on the 5 hour flight from LA to Honolulu. 🙂
