That says it all.

Got the PATA 180GXP on second IDE as single master - MMC disk manager sees it as 128G and gives it a little red circle as well.

This is on an Asus Nforce2 board - the basic level one cant remember the model.

What do I need to do to get the full 180G ?

Oooh, btw, make sure the jumpers aren't set for "128 gb limit" if that's an ibm drive.

if bios reads the full amount, it's windows fault

if that's the case .. go to the manufacter of the hdd and look up possible fixes

Nforce 2 should recognize the size... but if not then you'll need a bios update. If the bios does read it correctly, then you'll need the latest SP patch like jojo said.

I have SP4 actually and the BIOS sees 185Gigs

Turns out - you need to add a registry value to get windows to work right:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B305098

The following conditions are necessary for the correct functioning of 48-bit LBA ATAPI support:
A computer with a 48-bit LBA-compatible Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) installed.
A computer with a hard disk that has a capacity of greater than 137 gigabytes (GB).
You must enable the support in the Windows registry by adding or changing the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters

To enable 48-bit LBA large-disk support in the registry:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters

On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: EnableBigLba
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 0x1

Quit Registry Editor.

Hmm

Now 2k recognises that I have a big huge drive, but when I try to make a 20G/40G/115G partition, it says the "Volume Size is Too Big"

Not sure what to do - want to make a 20G for Windows and apps, a 40G for games and the rest for data and install files and music and whatnot.

Oh - I want it to be FAT32 - maybe thats the problem?

Use a Win98 bootdisk to create your FAT32 partitions since 2K/XP limits you to 32GB (each)

ok, a couple things:

1. My previous config was 1 40G drive and 1 80G drive - both FAT32 so I could get to them from a win98 boot disk.

2. When I boot to my previous OS (98) and go to a command prompt (in real mode), I am in a win98 dos environment. At that point, the drive is seen as being 45Gigs only.
I tried to make a 20G primary dos partition but after I made it, it was not shown as existing.

This is so weird.

I could probably do NTFS and be fine, but I really prefer Fat32 so I can get at my stuff with a win98 boot disk.

but ntfs is so supior to fat32 why bother with fat32. BTW there are free ultilities that will let you read ntfs partitions from DOS if you really need that feature.
