OMG I need help on Level 14 of Starfighter for PS2

I hate to ask, but i'm on level 14 and once i get inside that hanger wtf am I supposed to do? I fly through the pipes and the merc leader makes me his b*tch, then I drop his shields and they shoot up again then he flies to the next hanger. I can't take out the shield generator because it has a shield in front of it (who would have thought). How do I get out of the hangers and kill the damn leader?!
