I was on 105 East freeway this evening around 11:00. I was on lane 4 (there were 5 lanes, Lane 5 being the far left or the carpool line) going about 70-80. then all of the sudden a car 150-200 feet in front of me lost control and drift/swirf/ram straight into the center concrete divider -- all the way from Lane 1.
At first I thought he was racing and want to cut into the then-empty Lane 5 just to get a clear lane. my natural instinct tells me to punch the gas and pursuit him, but then I realize he cut all 4 lanes just a little bit too fast, and soon he hit the central divider and BOUNCE back into lane 1. Miraculously that car hit no body.... there were about one car in each lane right behind that car, including me. thank god I didn't get too close, god bless my two-digit horsepower engine.

oh, that car did manage to hit one car in Lane 1 though, the car lose alot of momentum already and was quite slow, but that poor guy on lane1 didn't brake hard enough and collide together at quite low speed.

I called the cops after.
boy, that was the first accident I WITNESSed (gee, finally I get to witness one and NOT participate in one)

Outersquare: hehe, I bet you thought I were the one who got in the accident.

where on the 105? I live near the western end of it.

oh, and normally, the numbering is from left to right. Lane 1 is the fast lane, next to the carpool lane

I've been in a couple, but never actually witnessed one, pretty crazy.

the only accident i've ever seen was one on the way to vegas.

my dad was driving me and my friend and his friend up to comdex 1997 (i was 16 at the time). we were playing tetris on our ti-85s, when all of a sudden this giant dust cloud came out. apparently some sleepy person in a minivan drove into the center dirt part, and his van flipped over. like we called 911 on my dad's cell, and well the people were coming out pretty unharmed apparently, just some cuts. i guess my dad's other friends were behind by about half an hour, so they told us later that the van caught on fire and exploded later.

if you drive on that freeway long enough (i commute daily to work on the 105) you'll know that there are a lot of dumbasses driving on that freeway.

Not as bad as the 10, especially east of LA (San Gabriel area). Oh my god, I want to kill someone when I drive over there.

The 101 is pretty bad too, as is the 110S at the 105 interchange (with the multiple freeway exits). That one ALWAYS screws someone up. I've seen someone go from lane 1 to lane 6 in 200 feet because they didn't realize that the carpool lane has its own exits. Even worse is when people do that the other way around.

I witness car accidents outside of my school everyyear. I come back from the Tech Center and head toward our normal school, and during the winter (Michigan Winter) cars always rear end each other, atleast 2 a year. Its fun, I look forward to it becasue I get to miss a little bit of school to report it and make sure no ones dead.

I live next to a major downtown junction (an extremely busy freeway interchange + several enterances and exits) that doesn't always flow smoothly. I get to hear a crash like a couple times a month out my window. I've never seen one though, I'm usually doing something other than staring out my window when I hear them, and there are some apartment buildings that block my view.

Dancing Peacock:

it was on 105 East bound right before the 19 exit

kt:
105 looks new and has very nicely paved roads. I do not see any accident potential compare to other older freeways like 710 and 110 -- 105 is pretty much a straight-a-way with some up and down hills.

I've witnessed a lot of accidents in Germany, but rarely people survive there when it happens... 90% of them happen at nigh, with drivers falling asleep doing 170mhp. You always see burning cars and medic choppers in the morning. :(

I saw this benz, who flew at like 270 kmh past us, and then he didnt make the turn and it was winter, so the car flipped. He rolled about 12 times, but he came out alright, apparently the setabelt and all the airbags saved him.

Some of the things I've heard of in the past are just downright amazing... Some people will get into a huge car crash and walk out without a scratch, and some will just get into a minor incident and be effected in some way for the reaminder of their life, or even die.

I know its based on how the accident occurs and how hard the actual person gets hit, but not the car, but it's just...scary in some ways.

Well, see if the car actually HITS something and stops (like a wall or a truck), then the driver is fycked (no matter what car it is), but if the car goes into a spin and starts flipping, bouncing and stuff, then you hope you are in a Benz, BMW, Audi, etc... since they survive those things pretty well and take all the punishment away from the driver.

You may think that way.. to you it's a straight-a-way freeway so what can happen right? To women, a straight-a-way freeway is a good opportunity for them to put on make-ups or check on their mascara. Trust me dude, I've been on that road long enough to noticed that.

Yup, i know what you mean.. people from that area drive as if they are the only one on the road.

Ornery: it is the foolish instinct deep deep within... don't worry though, it is leaving me slowly.

kt: I think I know who those "people from that area" are. pls excuse my kind :)

lizium: vivid imagery indeed. it sounds like it is very common to see M3, RS4 and CLK AMG to flip over on the autobahn everyday huh?

Hahhahaha, so true.

But good thing for the center concrete divider, crossing over to other side of traffic would have been a bigger suck. Even a tank cant cross one easyly, at least at last check on "worlds wildest police chases".

I saw one coming back from LA once, a small truck towing a uhaul trailer had the trailer's tire go low and it twisted, turning the truck on it's side, and sending it from lane #4 all the way to the center barrier. The driver had only minor injuries, the passenger had a laceration, and a baby not in a seat died.

My Grandma used to be a nurse in Arizona, you'd be suprized on how easily people can roll any type of car on a straight flat road with wide shoulders. Basically here's the situation:
Driver becomes inattentive
Car drifts off the pavement
Driver yanks the wheel to get car back on asap
Car overshoots and is unstable due to the sudden body roll
Driver yanks the wheel back
Car chassis violently rolls back as the car turns the other way as fast as possible
The sudden loading/unloading of the tires and suspension causes one side of the car to dig in while the other lifts
The car rolls.

If you get a car in resonance 25MPH isn't always safe. So speed isn't much of an issue as much as inattentiveness and panic. (possibly partially due to inexperience)

I once witnessed a guy driving a 70s Chevy pickup swerve in front of us, collide into a phone pole and slide on its side for about a 100 feet. These old pickups had gas caps that protruded on the side and this thing had broken off and had leaked gas all over the road and caught on fire. The guy never moved and the truck was completely engulfed by the time firefighters arrive. My friends and I approached the truck at one point until a tire exploded and scared the crap out of us. If I recall the newspaper article correctly, the man suffered a heart attack before running off the road.

AU Tiger:
you are one brave man,

the first thing came across my head after seeing the accident was whether should I hit reverse and go back and help the two cars... but it was dark, and the site is near Compton, so I called 911 instead.
