An old insurance policy was found on my grandmother who passed away 25 years ago. Why now I don't completely understand, but my dad processed the paperwork for him and his siblings, and just received his portion of the payout. He wanted to share some of it with us kids.

I had absolutely no idea this was coming! I've been anxious to pay off a credit card and get out of debt, and I think this just sealed the deal and bought my freedom teh evil bank. (most of it anyways, I've got to play with some of it!)

Cliffeys:

1) grandmother dies 25years ago
2) insurance policy found last year
3) dad gets share
4) dad gives share

lol 😀 It wasn't a very big policy. He wouldn't say exactly but overall it was less than 6 figures.

damn..Im insuring my parents now.

now go pay off your credit card debt and avoid going back into debt. this is an opportunity to act responsibly.

lol, guess I can't wait till my parents die. The day they die is the day I'm debt free!!

On a serious note, thank your dad and be responsible and don't be tempted to spend it recklessly. Take $25/mnth and start putting it into your rainy day fund from the interest that you'll be saving from not having to pay towards debt. Rarely does opportunities come knocking on one's door.

Wow, that's definitely a nice surprise...I wonder what the first toys were that popped into your head 😛

First thoughts:

Upgrade my computer (from a 3500, hehe)
buy twin 20" lcd's for my work
buy clothes
take a serious vacation caribbean.

Then came the credit card idea. 😀

DONE!!!

😉

Use it to buy a replica NCAA basketball championship trophy.
No longer worth it given the outcome.

Was this adjusted for inflation? If not, you really got screwed over.

Or at least your dad did

Interesting question, no idea how it was processed being so old and whether or not it was adjusted or interest paid. All I know is that taxes for it are very unforgiving, altho I'm not liable for any, he is (which he doesn't want me to pay any.)
