OMG OMG OMG... I just killed a god. Someone help me. I ran my friend's 1GHZ Tbird with a crappy OEM fan... and i forgot the heatsink compound... It stank really bad, there was gooey stuff on the heat sink.. and the RMA # sticker on the CPU is TOTALLY fried. HOLY F*CK. DO any of you think it will still run??? I dont have $600 to replace it.. im going to be FU*Ked... OMG.... :( I ran for about 5 seconds.. then I noticed the smell... they stupid fuvking me.. i ran it for 10 seconds more... there was probly minimal HS contact/transfer... should I try to return it? Or would that be immoral? The HS was that type with a dumb little pad.. and im used to dealing with Celly's so... i forgot the HS compound was 100%% necessary. Please advise.

Segan...fallen from heaven.

Calm down...I'm not so sure that you fried the chip..Maybe everything around it (the stickers, etc)...That chip need very good cooling, so I don't know if I would even try it again without a good Heatsink/fan and good thermal compound. Thats a starting point...You could just place some thermal compound on the thing with the heatsink/fan and try it again...I don't think if could be hurt..especially if it already is...Just make sure you have good contact between the Heatsink and the CPU..

Good Luck...

lol.. i dont know how to change it.. trust me.. im not laughing

I have a new question... are there ANY heatsinks that have special "soft metal" pads that dont need/require HS compound? Coz i really had in my mind that the little soft metal pad was good enuf for 400-600mhz cpus. I havent really dealt with "integrating" anything for friends faster than that.. and I even didnt use HS compound when helping my friend install his Celly 366. But I always use HS compound on my 600E@840 (900 on cold days). WTF was I thinking...
