DSL center calls up with this lady who's cancelling her service. I submit an RMA for the return of the hardware, & then she wants me to help her uninstall the modem. While I'm waiting for her computer to reboot so we can start, I learn the following:

1) She doesn't know jack about computers.
2) Her mouse doesn't work.
3) She's already removed the hardware, without removing the drivers.
4) She wants me to set her previous dial-up account back up.

OMG what a mess...

:(:|:(

My wife works at a large hotel where cause they have no on-site admin so they have very restricted desktops. Anyway one lady decides she needs a cdrom drive in her PC well she guts the PC on the desk besides hers and yards out the CD slaps it into her box doesn't work 'surprise'
So swaps it back again and her PC still doesn't work properly fortunately she doesn't ah heck the machine she took it from.
She has 0 ability to do this or training and calls up my wife who is the most PC literate there and expects her to fix it?
Anyhow she told her she'd have to wait till she got hold of IT and TS till then.
Just gotta love people that would never conceive of fixing a toaster but tear apart a $1000 machine sure no problem.

The people that don't know anything 'tech stuff' about PC's are fine, and the ones that know what they are doing are fine. The problems arise when you get someone that doesn't know what they are doing but mistakenly thinks he or she posesses all the knowledge they need. Those kind of folks always seem to cause the most problems......

So I'm guessing I probably shouldn't call you when you get home complaining that the cup holder on my box just broke under the weight of my coffee mug and that I want another one, should I.

I hear you Viper!! I go through the same kind of stuff at home all the time. We now have three computers in our house and I'm the only one who knows anything at all about computers, besides the fact that they exist.

My dad doesn't seem to understand that in Windows you need to go Start=>Shutdown=>Shutdown in order to turn off the computer. Instead he just pulls the plug out from the wall!!!!:Q:Q:Q

My mom has a computer question every five minutes, and it's usualy some little thing that almost anyone could figure out on their own. I'm trying to teach my brother everything I know but he's a slow learner. GRRRR!!! This is driving me insane!! :|:|:|

Muerto, the solution to the problem with your father is getting tape and putting it over the reset and power buttons and then putting a BIG sign on the power cord saying, "CLICK START, THEN SHUTDOWN, THEN SHUTDOWN...stupid!"

For yer momma, get her a "Windows98 for Dummies" book and tell her to memorize it and highlight stuff she doesn't understand.

For your brother, don't bother teaching him yourself, tell him to teach himself. That is how I did it...well, with a little help from my sister's boyfriend (computer consultant). Hands on experience, as sadistic and stupid as that may seem, is the best way to learn the innards of a computer. To learn ABOUT the stuff in the computer, well, anandtech and anandtech forums are the best. :)

Viper, I feel for ya man, but just think, in another few years maybe you'll be the boss and get to laugh at the people below you for having to deal with the lady you dealt with today. ;)
