Holy crap! I was trying to free up some space before a much needed defrag on my laptop drive, so I wanted to weed out the big files. So I do a search and I find a 778,240KB file called 'rpm.cf1' in my 'Application Data' folder under 'Google Desktop Search'.

WTF!!??! 770 megabytes for a bloody index file? Damn!!!! What's worse...its in my local data folder, so if I had other users on this machine (thank God its just my personal laptop) then each user would have its own index file (all probably about the same size!)

So how big is your index file? This is only a 60gb drive so I'm sure others' indices are much bigger.

edit: wow...just noticed there is ANOTHER index file called 'fii.cf1' that's 120mb!! WTF?!? Do you think MSN Desktop's index is even bloatier?

Good god. I wonder how much HDD space google actually has.

If a single PCs index file is 770 MB then whats google using to Index the internet?

Maybe google should just buy Western Digital.

QFT,

thats what boggles my mind when people go on about WinFS for Windows Vista (aka longhorn) being so great for searches.

Its not just for search for file, it index your web history, your aim conversations, your emails. Its come in very very handy for me. Even though you might know where you put all your documents, do you have to manually search through all your docs if you're looking for something specific?

The average ATer, even the n00b neffers, are far more advanced than the average user out in the world. There are lots of people that need this to keep track of their files.

Google desktop is a sure fire way to subract 10 years from your hard disk's life.

It's going to be allot of use for servers imho. In my place of work we have a backup of jobs done in the last year on a network drive, which contains collateral etc. At roughly 1.2TB it takes an age to search using traditional windows search when someone wants to look back for a file for reference. At home I have no need, because like most users here I know where all my stuff is kept. For the average user, it will be a useful addition.

The system requirements seem to suggest such.

I thought a recent Technology Review article mentioned 1GB for the index, but perhaps I am remembering incorrectly.

That's what you get for using a ghetto desktop search like Google's. Try Yahoo's...much better interface and customization options so you can avoid the unnecessary bloat.
