I have NEVER had such a severe problem with spyware until I installed msgplus (msgplus.net) for MSN Messenger now I KEEP getting damned "http://searchweb2.com/searchbar.html" crap and "my2search" bars hitting the bottom of my screen and, everytime I change my homepage back to my server it puts some stupid damned passthrough thing in the way.

I've run adaware and spybot they picked up a few things but there are STILL problems :|

There's a folder which I don't recognise called "Atom Dent Logo" and has a blank exe in it called "32third.exe". PLEASE help me I'm losing my mind :(

Close IE and all open windows and run Hijack This again. Check the below entries and click on Fix Checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OnlineCdrom] C:\PROGRA~1\Atom Dent Logo\32third.exe

When you have done this, boot into Safe Mode (restart your PC and tap F8 as it restarts), make sure that you can view hidden files and folders and run a search for and delete Atom Dent Logo folder.

DAMMIT! I typed it out and the mod moved it before I could submit. FVCK!

Let's try this again.

First off, close any programs you have open. Copy this post to a text file and save it so you don't have to open IE while you are doing this. That could re-launch the spyware. Get a piece of paper (or in the same text file) and write down any names of programs, companies, urls... etc that are pissing you off.

Step One: Start >> Run >> MSConfig. Goto the "startup" tab, and uncheck anything you don't recognize or that you recognize as the offending progarms. It's okay if you accidently turn something off that you want, you can turn it on again later.

Step Two: CTRL + ALT + DEL. Select the processes tab, then click to sort by username. Kill any process you don't recognize running by your username. You should only have open explorer.exe, since I told you to close everything else. You might get two processes with the same name... if you close one, the other will open it back up. If you get this, restart and try it again.*

Step Three: Start >> Control Panel >> Internet Options. (DO NOT OPEN THIS FROM IE. YOU SHOULDN'T EVEN HAVE IE OPEN!!) Click "Delete Files" Then click "Settings" and then "View Objects". Delete any objects you don't recognize. If you delete something that is okay, it's alright, it will just download again next time you need it. While you are in here, type in the address you want for your homepage, but do not surf there to get it. If the URL is too long to type, just put it yahoo or something for the time being.

Step Four: Restart. At this point, you should have stopped the spyware from running all by itself. You should be able to restart without it starting up. If this is not true, start over. You missed something. When everything is good, move on.*

Step Five: My Computer >> (System Drive) >> Program Files. Delete the folders and files of anything you don't recognize, or anything you recognize as the offending program. At this point, you should be able to safely run IE, so if you don't recognize something, you can google the name and see if anything turns up about it.

Step Six: Start >> Run >> Regedit. Remember the list I told you to make? Search the registry for all of those terms and URLs. Delete any offending keys, or if they seem to have modified data (such as modifying the http:// prefix setting to be their URL) change it back to what it should be.*

Step Seven: Once again, restart. Again, you shouldn't have any spyware running and things should be fine now. There may be a few pieces of junk left over, but they won't do anything to you without the rest of their programs. *

For every step that ends with a "*", You MIGHT want to run spybot/Adaware/etc AFTER you complete the step, to save you a little work.

This is how you manually remove spyware (and many other programs, for that matter.)

If you have no idea what I mean at any point, you probably don't know what you are doing and you should learn about that before you try this.

This SHOULD work for all versions of windows 98 and above.

Most importantly, add this thread to your favorites so you never have to post about spyware ever again.

No better spyware remover than Bazooka Spyware remover . It finds them, and then gives you detailed instructions on how to get rid of them. It finds things that ad aware, spybot, spyware blaster and a host of other good programs don't. Give it a shot!

format and install a fresh version of windows.
What a ludacris suggestion. Maybe, after all else has failed this would be a valid idea. Doing this before a concerted effort to fix the problem is, forgive me for being blunt, plain stupid, and the suggestion was too.

I agree with the other suggestions in the thread though. There also may be a tool to remove your specific spy/adware.

You're all wrong. Patchou himself sez not to mess with the registry or use Spybot or anything else to get rid of the spyware that his program installs, otherwise you will be just 3 degress shy of screwed. Uninstall instructions are posted on his forum, in a thread he opened. Just follow those instructions.

BTW, the installation wiz *does* tell you that this thing is gonna be installed...it's just that it's selected by default, so if you're one of those peope who don't read the EULA and just click Next->Next->Next->Finish, well...

Leaving junk in the registry slows the startup and can lead to crashes.

Besides, are you going to trust a guy who writes useless programs to invade your computer that won't let themselves be uninstalled easily? Come on, the guy distributes spyware, makes it so it re-installs intself when you clearly don't want it, and to uninstall what you didn't want in the first place you MUST visit his site to get his specific instructions? Load of BS.

Nothing at all wrong with this suggestion. Most of us reinstall every few months anyway.

I always check that no sponsors are selected, it must of been very well hidden :|

edit: Oh well tough titties for his crappy spyware, I manually removed every file and registry entry / toolbar from my machine, took 2 hours but got there in the end.

The program that guy wrote uninstalls just fine. And it's not useless, Plus! has been very well received for years now.

The issue is that his new "sponsor" is selected by default to be installed, but the average user just glosses over the "sponsor" option during the wizard.

Besides, are you gonna trust some guy who writes a third-party add-on that is totally unsupported by Microsoft, REGARDLESS whether or not it installs spyware?

Oh jeez, sorry, stupid question...

There is one huge thing wrong with this suggestion: There is simply no need [/quote] to reinstall every few months. If "most" of "us" (whoever "us" is) reinstall every few months because you think you need to, those of "us" are living in the past. Windows XP does not equal Windows 9x, where it was practically assured a reinstall was needed every few months. You should reinstall XP that often only if you manage to really kill Windows XP that often. And as your poll is showing in your other thread, many of "us" tend to agree with me.
