It's more drastic than that. Nowadays, commercials and trailers can take up to 30 minutes of time. And yes there is a class action lawsuit in some state against this.
We had 18 previews before LOTR: The Two Towers. It was nearly 45 minutes long. We also had Pepsi commercials, a truth commercial, and some other stupid sh!t.
Also, if a DVD doesn't let me skip a preview, I return it to the rental store and get a refund. I've argued 3 or 4 times for it. They always reluctantly give it to me. I fvcking hate paying to watch a movie then being forced to watch ads. It makes it really hard for me to care about any of the media companies when all they want to do is rape us for more money. Next thing you know, you'll have DVDs that you buy AND have to pay for each time you watch it. I think piracy is one of the only ways the consumer can express their views to the media companies. It's non-violent protest.
