so I'm working on my lab write up, and all of the sudden I hear a clacking sound coming from my computer, and it suddenly reboots. Then, it gives me a boot disk failure, which freaks me out, since I think I have to pull a bad drive or the dreaded format c:. Luckily, I just let my baby rest for a little bit, boots up fine this time, scan disk fixes some bad clusters, and I'm back up. I swear I lost a couple good years from the end of my life though...thank god for backups, though reinstalling os's are a pain. Alrighty, back to writing labs...anyone else as frazzled as I am?

Same thing happened to me yesterday. What kind of HD do you have? Do you hear like a whinning sound then a click? Wat the hecks wrong? I about to call maxtor on the warranty.

Hell even, the 60 GXP.
Actually, I heard IBM is not certifing the 120GXP for server use because it shouldn't be run 24/7. They need to get their act together.

trust me you really don't want to get me started on this subject, let me just say that I will not be purchasing anymore IBM hd's of either the IDE or SCSI variety, for SCSI I'll go with Seagate and I guess for IDE it'll have to be Maxtor

Actually I'm not finished researching the issue and haven't decided on a course of action as of yet.Apparently,if the 60gxp's are going to fail they tend to so early in the life of the drive, heat is also suspect as a factor as is where the drive was manufactured, it also appears that people getting drives back on rma's have issues. Most of the dives I installed have been running longer than 3 months, I use wid-mid towers and good cooling so what I will most likely do is to issue an email advisory telling clients that reports have begun surfacing about issues with the drives along with IBM's advisory on the 8 hr runtime limit of the new 120gxp. I'll advise frequent backup's,if clients wish the drives replaced it will be at their own cost.
