So, I'm on vacation, knowing I have to VPN to work a few times. My family says they have high speed internet, so I figure no big deal... but wait.. they have comcast broadband.
VPN IS NOT SUPPORTED THROUGH COMCAST RESIDENTIAL BROADBAND!

Plus, you have to clone the MAC address of the original machine to install a router, no big deal for most of us here, but most folks have no idea how to do that..

I had no idea...

You sure about the cloning nonsense? In almost all cases that I've been in (I've used Comcast, Cox, Adelphia, and a few others) you just have to reset the router so that it picks up your new mac.

Had to clone it in the Seattle region. No big deal, but I'd hate to ask my mom to do it.

VPN also did not work. They said a 95$ per month service would be the only way to use VPN.

Comcast is AMAZING if the particular geographical region has been upgraded beyond @Home's (or the original regional provider, in some areas) nonsensical setup. Seattle apparently hasn't been.

I've been using this before @Home. I used it back when it was TCI yayuhhh. Then they got @Home and then ATTBI bought them off. I was there.

I never had to clone any mac address.

first off comcast works without cloning mac's.. my router is cloned.

In anycase VPN works fine for comcast in sacramneto, i VPN into our servers and into school so often that its not funny.

BS.. i got comcast residential and i just logged into teh school servers via VPN and sent a print job to the printer at work from home.

unless comcast has different things for different areas, all areas should be the same.

That's not Comcast. They're a Comcast-affiliated local cable TV provider, not Comcast proper. The REAL Comcast dropped the @Home moniker YEARS ago, as well as all the silly gimmicks.

The real Comcast cable internet product is called Comcast High-Speed Internet (or Comcast HSI) - Comcast @Home is a legacy product, which allowed their name to be franchised out to be used under a set of guidelines with a uniform product blahblahblah. What makes this REALLY confusing, is that local CATV providers could also franchise the Comcast name, as well as Comcast @Home. It appears that the provider in question decided they didn't need to move from @Home to HSI, probably because the requirements on their network are much harder, and they don't have the money to upgrade it themselves - something that Comcast is more than willing to help remedy by buying their network in whole and fixing it.

Well, all I know is I could not use VPN while vacationing at a comcast home. A few phone calls later I was told that the residential service did not support it.

VPN works just fine, they just won't help you get it working - Hence the "not supported." They're not blocking it in any way, but they don't want to hear about it if you can't get it working. Pretty much standard fare for consumer broadband.

VPN works great over my Comcast line BTW.

The problem may not be the ISP. Also, in the case of ISPs who do block vpn, your company may consider purchasing an ssl vpn solution, where the vpn tunnel uses ssl and the ISP cannot block it without rendering the internet useless to you.
