The dead portion would necrose, and that would kill the other one. I just don't see how you could separate dead portions once they are so unified.

It's a really tough situation no matter how you look at it. Unless you are a religious nutjob and think it's God's will they were born that way and think it's some sort of blessing or test of faith.
