Yeah...I manage a computer store.

You have no idea how hard it is to find real competent help. The last like 3-4 temp guys that were hired I pretty much had to babysit and check everything they did (even after explaining how to do things) so it really saved no time and actually wasted more it seemed.

I got my job there when they asked me to fix a problem on a Win98 Compaq and I loaded up DOS and fixed it all through the CLI. If I could only find someone that could do stuff like that it would be nice.

Now that I manage the place I see all the resume's that come through there....it's a joke. I've seen so many words spelled wrong and horrible grammar....even if they are not that great at English they should at least be able to take the time to have a friend or someone proof it for them. It's just sad.

sigh its so hard getting a job at a computer store at the age of 18 and still in school. Its like, I walk into any computer store and can talk right over the heads of all the employees and never get the help I came in there for. Its like, I'm not looking for a tech position, although placing at a national tech competition should say something. Which reminds me, gotta get my new resume out there.
Too bad, seeing someone young like me turn in a resume, its probably never looked at again by the manager. At least have the decency to give me an interview and determine my abilities then. lol not 'oh he's too young to know more than my current employees'
or maybe its only because i can't work full-time. who knows, maybe I am making the wrong assumptions. :sigh:

Age wouldn't matter to me. I'm 24 and I've been doing computer work for 8 years now.

If the resume is written and presented well, I will hang on to it and give it to the owner if we need to hire someone. If I'm unsure of ability I would call you up for an interview and have a computer ready that needed to be fixed, let you give it a shot, pay you for your time fixing it and then hire/don't hire based on the job you did on it/interview.

But..then again I'm not most managers. I could care less about paper certifications. That doesn't mean jack.

If you were near Chicago I'd gladly come to work for you.

He knew about dual core cpus and he had a price up for a $2300 A64 3500+ 1Gig PC3200 2x80 Gig in Raid 0 and 6800 Ultra so I had some hopes but alas :(

I hate that =/

I won't sell anything to my customers that I wouldn't feel comfortable putting into my own personal computer. So unless they ask for something specifically and won't let me dissuade them, I only sell more quality parts.

Sure..it's more expensive, but it works better for them and causes no hassles for me from bad/failed lesser quality parts.

I love Intel motherboards and use them exclusively for all business computers. Not that Intel would be the fastest board or CPU but because if the board fails I can call Intel and I will have a new board the next day in the morning. You can't beat service like that.

I'm dreading having to shop for a replacement tower for my dad's office tomorrow. I just need a basic cheap as dirt computer, and I'm going to get the run around like no other I'm almost certain of it... I hate dealing with techs that don't know what they're talking about.

Many years ago, just after Eggheads closed, a new "Mom and Pop" type computer store opened in it's place.

3d accelerators had just come out, and I was gearing up to purchase my first one. I researched my options on the Net, and went to this new store.

"Do you have the Voodoo in stock?"

"Voodoo? No. We don't carry them, they're underpowered."

"Really? Hm. Well which 3d accelerators do you stock?"

"S3. S3 makes the best cards hands down."

"S3!?!"

"S3. The Virge. Great card, we won't sell anything else."

Thankfully I went to the Computer City down the street and found a Voodoo.

Haven't set foot in a mom and pop since.

well.......at least they're better than a lot of people who only cares about how many mb of ram the video card has

Joe A: "is that a good video card? (referring to a 5600 256mb)"

Joe B: "of course it's good! it has 256mb!! it has to be fast"

Thankfully they are not all like that.

Misspellings and such on resume's... that's just dumb no matter what job you are trying to get. To me, either you are being very irresponsible (especially for computer related job, heard of "speeel cheeek?") or you need a few more ESL classes.

How about the ones that want a job and proudly flash their shiney new A+ certification while never having worked on computers? :disgust:

When I was 18 and worked at CompUSA I started out as a stocker and at 6.15 an hour. I was always taken aside by managers telling me that I shouldn't talk to customers about computers since I was a software stalker and to stay in my section. One day it was real busy and a customer asked me to help them on a computer he was looking at. I went over with him and helped him out. The customer was surprised that I could answer all of his questions and liked my recommendations. He bought 5 computers for his dentist office all with warranty's and flat panels. Funny thing was that he was actually looking at AMD computers and I was the first one who agreed with him that it would be best for what he is doing, he said he hated the fact he was always talked out of what he came in there looking for.

The next day I was sat down in front of the General manager and was told she would make me a Sales person if I wanted. I took the job and ended up making 150-300 a day which was almost twice the avg old dude salesperson.

The thing is about these places is that they have a bias towards a lot of their employees. Start out at a low position, don't flaunt your abilities .

I stopped working there when a customer of mine came in and hired me for a lot more.
